I hope that Starz/Hbo/Showtime will all have Free video on demand over the internet, if you sub to AEP or Plat pack. This would be a usefull feature. I just hope that there will be something sold by Dish that will allow you to have ethernet connections for your 622 dvrs that is wireless or just plugs into a electric plug and gives you ethernet connections.

Timing is important. Feb 15th may be a must do date for dish.

I thought i read that both Apple, plans to release there new iTV box and Direct TV plans to also have on demand content via high speed internet connections the first of the year.

Xbox 360 already is doing it.

Apple should be on track.

I have not heard any new dates for Direct TV.

If Dish prices it right like Apples does with iTunes, it will be a hit. Hopefully they will match Apples itune prices of say $1 to $2 dollars or something.

I second this request. When I had cable VOD anything that was available that was shown as part of your subscription package was free. I also see this as a place to put HD network content , say on a 1 day delay. This content should be free to all who have networks and an HD subscription.

I don't see it being free. I just hope that they make the price right. This could have a lot of potential if the price is right. I agree with the earlier comment about Itunes. In all honesty I never ever expected Itunes to take off after people had been getting free music online for several years. But they were smart and did a great job of figuring out what the correct price point should be. As a result, people are perfectly happy paying for music instead of stealing it. As long as Dish doesn't set a crazy price for this it can be a big hit. It would also be very cool if they worked out a deal with the movie channels (like the cable co's have) to make the content on those channels free (assuming you subscribe to that channel).

This sounds awesome...but why do I have a feeling they will add an enabling fee just to use the service and/or seriously overcharge for the downloads, just because they can.

If you look at Dishes CURRENT rip off scam of PPV on demand costing $1.00 more than the ones in the channel 500 range, $3.99 vrs $4.99 or more.

I would guess Dish will also be greedy and up charge the internet based on demand by also a Dollar more.

As long as people are stupid enough to pay the $1.00 Dish will try to do it again and again.

After all they are a publicy held company, they have to try to make a big profit as they answer to the stock holders.

Hopeflly they also listen to the stock holders who may also be Stock Holders and realized they are not happy with the $1.00 over charge.

I put a dedicated CAT5 drop in my house expecting a feature like this at some point. Glad to see it might be here soon. I have it plugged in now, but it still does not request a DHCP address.

I'll post when it does get an IP. I might also fre up Ethereal and see what I can capture when it starts communicating with Dish.

Reverse engineer the DishOnline protocol to create your own local server to mimic the Dish server, thus turning your 622 into a home media center .

Since you aren't modifing your equipment or receiving anything you shouldn't be, I don't see anything wrong with this. Its been done before with the Onkyo NetTune receivers (although less complex).

Sounds like it's doable. I would like to know what encoders they are using for streaming.

I get the feeling that external storage and DIsh online are going to be the two big announcements.

Now, if we can use the IP connection as replacements for phone lines; especially to get rid of the $6 charge it would be really cool.

There is no real reason it couldn't be. It would just affect the time it takes to download it, and also how much it costs Dish for the bandwidth. If we're PAYING for the HD download though and Dish isn't out cash for the bandwidth, I think we should get it full-rate.

However, the marketing department might not think that a 18-hour download for a 2 hour movie is OK, so that might be what limits the bitrate.

Downloaded movies COULD even be in 1080p (HD-DVD and Blueray level), but I don't think the ViP 622 can do that high. Might be something for Dish to consider in their next model. After all, if I have a HD-DVD or Blueray player and I'm paying for the movie, why wouldn't I do Netflix or Blockbuster and get the 1080p picture?

Scott has identified my two chief concerns with this, knowing E*'s track record to date. I understand they don't want this new offering to be cross-elastic with their current packages; however, I hope they don't wreck a great new concept.
