Finally got the install yesterday !!!!!

Hello all, well, after much debate and consideration I had my direct install yesterday morning and all I can say is WOW !!!! I wish I had switched over earlier. Wife is complaining about a couple things but will learn the remote functions and where to find things as time goes on, lol. The picture is incredible. I got the HR34-700 and I have to say I am impressed so far. I heard from other sites around that the guides and such were slow , but mine seams to zip along nicely. I have already recorded several shows and played back a couple with no problems,even taped some shows from primetime i had missed a couple weeks back off the VOD, Love it ! Only thing I had to do was adjust the picture color and such a little on my vizio, but now everything is fine.Definitely glad i came over to direct.

That's where I switched from as well a couple months ago. Just curious, how long were you with them & why did you switch? Reasons may seem obvious now that we've both switched and enjoying Directv :), but what prompted you to make the switch? Mine was a series of things ranging from pq to Dish upgrade policies, constant threat of channels being dropped, ever increasing bill (which will happen here as well but at least I feel we'll be getting value for money) and Dish's mishandling of the English Premier League coverage.

Also a little concerned you got a HR34 & not the newer HR44 which is known to be more stable.
 
I switched from Dish last week. We were enticed by a $200 gift card to Sam's Club and some equipment upgrades. So far, so good. Nice PQ. I like the ability to record more and not forgo watching something live. Love the searching functions.

Over 2 years we'll only be saving something like $60, but I figured for the equivalent of upgrading to a Hopper and a Joey and getting a few more channels that I'd have to upgrade programming for in Dish, it was a nice trade off.

Fingers crossed and hope you enjoy the switch too.

?This isnt something to be concerned over, we still install 34s everday. Its just whatever happens to be on the van of the installer that shows up.
 
dalyew - I left dish because of all the problems they have keeping channels on the air, mainly its dish that has that major problem. Also my father in law got dish and I saw his pic quality, and dishes disput right now with media that could last forever , shut down our CBS and cw channels which we watch alot of CBS shows, so that made my mind up right there. I don't mind paying a little more for what I want and so far I am impressed. I am really enjoying my hr34 and have had no problem with the speed and response of the remote. so far so good. I am definitely glad i switched. Only reason we had dish was because of the hopper and being able to skip the commercials without touching the remote. But 30 sec skip is just fine. I love the dish cinema, have already watch some on demand programs that i missed off the history channel.
 
As I said before, with Directv 2 months now & enjoying it. PQ improvement over Dish still marvels me everyday as I thought it would be only marginal but in my case (I have 50" & 55" tvs) the improvement is significant. My teenage daughter still teases me every time she hears me commenting about the better service as she always wanted us to get Directv over Dish. ......I should've listened to her 2 years ago lol.
 
You will be sooooo happy with Directv and the Genie. I switched a little more than a year ago and I was so pissed at myself for waiting so long to switch, I was scared to death and now I look back and I don't know what the
heck I was so scared of. Switching from Time Warner to Directv has been the single greatest decision I have ever made in regards to my t.v. viewing.
 
My own little survey,as an installer, = People changed providers because a channel they had to have was dropped.
People changed providers because a channel they had to have was: added.

They would somehow find the money or at least agree to find the money to pay for their TV choices.
They would accept service outages if they felt someone was attempting to fix things.

Folks flocked from cable companies because the cable companies thought they were the only game in town & much better than OTA or the big dish operators. Now that programming can arrive from many sources the providers have to work hard while customers feel it is they who are the only game in town. :happydance:

Joe, I might have stayed with Dish if I felt they took my business seriously. I was paying up to $140 per month yet if I called to inquire about the addition or subtraction of channels, as much as how the CSRs tried to be pleasant, they couldn't tell you anything or misinformed you.

Getting them to upgrade equipment they deemed needed replacing at no additional cost was puzzling with free upgrades offered to some & others have to pay through the teeth. I know, not all accounts are the same but I'm talking about even a small explanation as to why not. I personally was treated by an accounts specialist supervisor as if I was trying to con them into upgrading a dvr that their technicians needed to be replaced. Even the Dish tech that was there listening to the conversation was bemused by his attitude.

I still rode it out till a couple months after until they messed up NBC'S EPL channels roll out & the impending Disney/ESPN dispute (still no agreement yet). Everything just accumulated and then I decided to switch. Of course when cancelling they offered the world, including that dvr upgrade that was "no way possible" previously.

I know it's still early with Direct but my feeling is that I'm dealing with a company that wants to offer an A Class product to it's customers. Every time I make contact with a representative they make you feel like your business is valued. I still wish for Dish to succeed as competition is always good and that will only push Direct to always keep improving.

I have been always proud to present the DirecTV product. Their engineering is impressive and even when you look at the screw ups they are small and fixed pretty quickly. I did have a conversation with a DISH wonk once and I shared that it is so much cheaper to keep current customers happy and paying the bills than constantly searching for new ones. Pissed off former customers wander off. stop sending in mopney and bad mouth their former vendor. The DISH guy responded....every new customer we get is one DirecTV doesn't have! That is their world.

Now if DirecTV would stop throwing installers under the bus I would get a blue shirt and go back to installing their product.....installers are the first, last and only person most customers meet.

You are on the cutting edge of this technology........enjoy the ride!

You left the biggie out, that there are those like myself, that got tired of dealing with the constant bit starving with ATT's U-Verse service, along with wives that are football fanatics, especially when they are Bears fans.

In order to keep my marriage civil, I finally after three years made the change to DirecTV, so that if the Bears are not playing, she can still catch Green Bay games, since they tend to be blacked out in my area, over the Rams (hate the constant change on the rules by the NFL).
 
Can you bring in off air channels to the Genie?
You would need the AM21 and an antenna, to get those channels that are in your local area, that are not available through the service. Say you live in Milwaukee, but also can get Chicago stations through an Antenna, but you can only get the locals for Milwaukee through Direct. Then the AM21 would be the best case scenario in that type of situation.

Really wanted it to work out with them as I usually stay with my service providers for a long time. I was with Uverse for around 5 years before they stopped innovating & increased compressing their signal (artifacts city baby).

I've found Direct is a better fit for us anyway as we're a sports loving family & with all the other pluses I've mentioned before, I definitely see that Direct strives to please sports lovers like us.

True dat!
Forgot about the sports.............There is a large segment of the DirecTV flock that will ignore all sins because the sports offerings are better than any other provider. Within the world of sports fans DirecTv can do no wrong.
When I suggest that the DirtecTV subscription could be cheaper if they didn't pay all those bucks to jockland the bar gets quiet and someone insists I get cut off & made to watch As The World Turns.
