Few more Newbie questions

Well, I spent most of yesterday reading the 10 pages of FTA threads, not every thread by any means, and I've also read all the sticky threads.. Some great stuff there.. I especially liked Iceberg's "Tip of the Iceberg" tips.. But, even after learning all I did I still have a few more questions...

What is a scaler ring..

Guys keep refering to "nets".. What is this...

Is Videocipher II useful these days or a thing of yesteryear...

Is old Primestar cable still useable.. I still have about 70' hanging across my cellar ceiling...

I know most FTA has gone digital.. Are there very much analog channels still out there.. Say like on G10..

When reading LyngSat it has F, for free tv, but how do you know which format it's in..

networks. ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX are usually referred as "the nets".

There is still some VCII stuff out there. Its analog. Most has converted to digital

it should say "DVB" or "Digicipher II"
DVB is what our FTA receivers use
DCII is 4DTV (the upgrade of analog VCII)

The 'nets' are usually refering to NBC, CBS, ABC, UPN from the Virgin Islands. There on c/band digital on G4 at 99-degrees.........check out Lynsat.com for further details.

I can vouch for the fact that Videocipher II + is still alive, although for how long is debateable. I was fooling around on G11 C Band analog and a screen popped up asking me to subscribe to IFC (Independent Film Channel). You also could get WE (Women's Entertainment) there in theory.

The most analog is on G4 and IA6, but a few other birds have some too.

Duh, now I see how to read LyngSat... G14 has ESPN / ESPN2, HBO and Showtime, plus a bunch more, in analog for pay channels.. But, really not much analog on the other satellites I just checked..

Cool, I have some extra cable..

If I had my 6' mesh dish parked on G14 for pay analog channels with a Toshiba TRX-80.. Then had a Primestar dish parked on G10 for the Ku side with a new Traxis 3500 how would you hook that up..

What they do is put 30" dish on your house and give you a receiver. Your existing cable TV goes into the box for analog cable and the rest comes from the sky. HITS is used for the base of a digital platform for cable operators. as for the dish part, Comcast is phasing that out slowly but surely since most cable operators has upgraded there plant. HITS 2 Home is basically a thing of the past.
however I would like to see a DTH service built off that platform kind of like StarChoice, which would be neat.
