I had a hws and a hopper with a sling adaptor so 2 connections from outside the home could be made.

Upgraded to hopper 3 and 4kj and it seems my external sling is now useless so only one connection from outside the home can be made (we also used them to watch on laptops at home where no tv's were like kitchen and pool patio).

Am I wrong about this or what work around can one imagine?

Thanks

Are you saying your attached Slingbox doesn't work with Hopper 3? What model Slingbox do you have?

It's the Dish sling.
The flat red thing you plug into dish usb slot.
Oh, OK. I thought you meant an external stand alone Slingbox. That would be a deal breaker for me updating to a Hopper 3 if that didn't work. The external standalone Slingbox works much better than Dish Anywhere.

Wow, I thought that is what he meant too. That would be a huge deal to many people.
Yep, I hear ya. The Dish Anywhere might be ok if I never had an external Slingbox before. What a big difference between the two. I am too spoiled to ever use Dish Anywhere compared to the real deal.

Hopper 3 works great with an external Slingbox (well except for when it's in 4K mode, then it does not output video that the Slingbox can understand. :D
Ya, that has me worried a little but it will be a while before 4K will be the norm. It is my RF modulators that give me more concern not working with 4K. Mirroring image to other TVs for syncing recordings is a big deal in my home. I don't know what I will do when 4K is the norm someday.

Does the sling box give you access to the stuff on the Dish DVR?

Yes, completely everything including OTA channels and your EHD. You use a virtual remote control that literally works everything in your Hopper. It is really awesome.
NICE.....love this forum (and it's members.)

So is there a better model or is there only one (like a uhd 4k model)?

I don't think there is a 4K model. I have the Slingbox 500, but they all work good. http://www.slingbox.com/Buy/BuyDirect.aspx
Is it accurate to say that the TV your Hopper and sling are hooked up to will display the same content?

So if it's hooked to the hopper 3 and I, from out of town, decide to watch a dvr'd show, the TV at home will have to show the same dvr'd show?

If this is the case, can it be hooked to a joey instead?

Yes, it would watch the same DVR'd show. I am not sure if it will work with a Joey. If you want, I can relocate my Slingbox to my Joey 1 and try it out. I should have time this Wednesday if you need to know.

Does Dish block hdmi content so component cables are required?
On my Slingbox 500 I have both component and HDMI connected to it. I forget the reason why but I think it has something to do with HDCP stuff. If the Joey works with Slingbox it will have to use the RCA outputs to the Slingbox.

Just tried out the HDMI cable with the Wireless Joey to the Slingbox and it works. During setting it up it does warn me there could be a HDCP issue for some programing. If you do get an external mount Slingbox spoiler1041, be advised that not all the Slingbox models have the HDMI connection. The Joey does not have component connections. I am done for the day. If there is anything you want me to try out or questions, catch up with you tomorrow.

Thanks for all the effort. Gonna do some HDCP research but will probably pull the trigger before the night is over.

Thanks again.
