external HDD for 622

Now, I'm sure that this has been posted before, but I didn't want to search for it. Now if I were to buy an external HDD for my 622, would I be able to hold other media/files or does Dish's software take over the whole drive. Knowing dish, I'm thinking it will take over the whole drive. I just want to make sure though. Thanks
