I'm seeing all these threads about hard drives and external power and blah blah blah and its confusing my small pea brained head. Okay, I want to hook up an external hard drive to my 722. With that being said the drive I have is a 120 gb laptop drive that I made an external with an external casing. How do I hook up a dedicated power supply to that? It won't just work if I plug it into the reciever's usb port? It did come up with the weirdest damn usb cable ive ever seen. Its got the end that plugs into the drive and then its got two usb ends coming out of it. Its got a short wire with a usb end on it and a longer wire with a usb end on it. Is that how I hook it up to a power source like a powered hub? One end in the hub and the other in the reciever? Would that work? Also, the only hub I personally have is the one that came with the original rock band game. lol Its a four port usb hub that plugs into one usb port making it four ports, but it does plug into the wall for power. Would that work? Man I'm confused...lol

Actually you're not confused. You are supposed to use an externally powered disk of capacity greater than 50GB (which your 2.5" drive satisfies) with your Dish receiver. Your external enclosure came with two USB A plugs because most 2.5" drives draw more than maximum spec (0.5A) from one USB jack. You plug them both in and you should be good to go. Powering a 2.5" drive from a powered hub has been reported to work.

Agree with boba, though. 120GB is rather small.

So plug in the little rock band hub and I'm good? And honestly I only have this drive because I upgraded the 120 gb hard drive in my ps3 to a 500 gb one so I just got an extra one. As you can see I am a gamer of course....lol but anyway, just hate having a hard drive that works not plugged into anything, and I really have no other real use for it. Was gonna use it for extram computer storage so not having any real purpose for it. Just wanted to hook it up to the dish reciever and mess with it. Which is why I don't want to buy a hub just use the rock band one that is also sitting around doing nothing. So just want something to goof with...lol
