Euro Dishes

Dude, they are so far ahead of us, it's not even funny. If I visited Europe, and was all wowed by the amount of dishes, the locals would be like "that's normal everyday tv"

I'll bet you 100's that all they have to do is go by their local consumer electronics store (our equivalent of Best Buy, Walmart, Circuit City) and find 100's of FTA receivers and dishes to choose from in the electronics section.

Wish it was that way here in the US!!

Remember how when TV antennas on every house was the norm? FTA dishes are the norm ALL over europe. Someone posted a really good photo of a ton of dishes in Iraq or some country out there. Wonder where that is now?

Iraq is in the middle east NOT Europe. But I catch your drift.

just look at a copy of Tele-Satellite magazine to see how much FTA is over there compared to here

here its a novelty...Europe its pretty much the norm

The amount of FTA channels you can receive in Europe (from European, North African, and Middle East feeds) are over 1000+. That is very normal over there. People in Europe have been using FTA systems since I was a child (and that is a long time ago). :)

In general, telecommunication industry in Europe seems to be ahead of the USA. For example France has IPTV (delivered through a fiberoptic network) for a while now. The USA Telecos are just starting with it.

Europe adopted the DVB-T digital standard. That makes it very convenient to receive and watch TV anywhere with a mobile (portable) TV system.

TV in europe is not what you imagine. Yes we have FTA channels but those are lame. And often you can't understand the language or the channel is dubbed like in germany and even those will be encrypted soon.

Each country has it's own pay-tv package(s) and encryption system. You can't subscribe to a package outside your own country. (and country's are small here) Prices for pay tv in the US are way cheaper. You guys get more value for your money. If i look at websites like dish or directv it's like a dream.

Let's take the Netherlands where i live. We have Canal Digitaal Satelliet. They carry about 40 channels. http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/canaldigitaal.html The dutch thematic channels are cable only :( We don't have HD channels. You need to buy your own dish and receiver. No free installs. No 3 room systems. For every receiver you need to buy a extra smartcard + pay full subscription fees. We don't have a decent program guide or TiVo. Ofcourse not every pay-tv package is that bad. A decent one is Sky Digital from the UK.

About programming.. Most shows are bad ripoffs from a US version. You won't believe the amount of reruns. And don't watch the news.. it's about 90% about the middle east. It's like our own news is less important. We don't have real locals. Although there is a definate need for localnews. Local-tv means nothing here and is done by volumteers. (only on cable) It's not really supported by the goverment.

I agree there are many different dishes in europe mostly because people are watching many satellites using a dreambox and cardsharing. That's really popular here. I also have access to all mayor pay-tv packages in europe using this system. But if i could receive a us package i would definately subscribe and gladly pay for it.

Lucky for me i have feedchannels and one is carrying WABC from NY right now :) The rest of my US programming (tv-shows) i get off the internet/usenet. I watch more downloaded stuff in HD than actual live TV

WOW! Then things must be really going back the way in Europe instead of forward for FTA!

When I lived there around 10 years ago there were more FTA channels from all over Europe the middle east, Asia and American than I could watch. (I know coz I tried)

Back then I could tune into EVERY European soccer game LIVE and with multi camera views, even my home team Glasgow Celtic (Ya Bass!)

MTV, Eurosport, SKY1, Discovery Europe, NBC Europe (Super channel)
Adult movies, HBO type movie channels. ALL the French Telecom (SECAM) satellites............. and many, many, many more!

Maybe I got out just in time from a FTA point of view of course :)

Those were the analogue days.......

Now it's all about control and encryption.

Pretty boring these days, you don't even need a big dish anymore, any dish that looks like a wok works fine.

We got HBO Rumania, HBO Turkey, HBO Armania, they are all the same and of course encrypted.

Of course if you like Arabic channels or Russian channels you have many FTA.

But in Europe we have like many languages and i don't understand Russian or German or even French.

europe has some cool dish movers/motors that we dont have here,,i like the look of this one

I was running digital AND analog back then, those indeed were the days :)

Yes FTA is big in the Arabic world.
