EHD use

New member and Dish user here.
Direct tv for years since finally caving on getting rid of my beloved C-band.
Have a Hopper w/sling installed home with one wireless Joey and one wired Joey.
Spend 6ish weeks in November and 6ish weeks in April on the road in our RV.
Bought a Wally and a Pathfinder X2 for the RV.
Wanting to bring home recordings with us, and be able to record and pause live tv in the camper.
So what EHD would be able to accomplish this task?

To my knowledge Hopper and Wally hard drives are not compatible with each other.

You would have to move the Wally to the house too.

You can not use an EHD that has recordings from a Hopper on a Wally, or vice versa. The Wally is not a DVR unless you pay $40 and add a separate EHD to it. Even then the EHDs are not transportable between Wallys and Hoppers. With that EHD in the RV and a Wally you would be able to record and pause live TV though, just not be able to watch recordings you made on the Hopper.

You would need to record the shows with a Wally and EHD to be able to take them with you.

OK well it sucks they cant share the drive.
Not looking to use the Wally at home, just the RV.
Is a USB powered drive going to work on Wally?
I also read about the possibility that solid state drives will not work, must be a disc drive?

Try the WD My Passport 1TB USB 3.0 drive. They are available at Walmart. I have one, and it works well with my Wally. I found out about it from a recommendation on this site.

It is best to use a self powered drive, as Dish recommends. Using USB power MIGHT be bad for the power supply.

Solid state drives are bad for this purpose, as they have a limited number of write cycles. And would likely be no faster.

If the RV can get an internet signal, just use dish anywhere to connect to your home hopper DVR. Connect your smartphone, tablet or laptop to the internet and to a tv and watch and record all programming and dvr programs as if at home.

I hope it does. I suggested awhile back that Dish should do something like that, to make it easier to get a DVR-activated Wally all in one step.

I have not tried one. I don't know if they use much more power than the 1TB ones, or if that would even make a difference in whether or not it would work.

After giving it some more thought, I realized that including the DVR activation fee in the bundle would be a waste of money for someone who has already paid the fee, if they purchase this. Perhaps Dish could discount the bundle in such cases, though.

Or possibly have two separate versions of the bundle.
