echostar TR-50 finalist- best of CES at CNet

Ive seen some indicate it has a built in digital tuner.

Where my in laws live--- they have cable and we just hooked it up to their new digital TV with no set top box required. Would this work as a DVR for them?

Far as I can tell it is an ota digital tuner with an analog tuner also. It can record two things at the same time. I don't know if it can do cable at all.

But I think the story is wrong. It does not have a HDMI output. I am 99% certain of that. Cuz I sure didn't see it when I looked around the back of it.
masterdeals posted a close-up of the back here which clearly shows HDMI. Were you guys actually at the same show?

PSIP Data for the guide and pssoble guide over ethernet (via the internet)

I am just finishing up a video on the TR50, keep checking the CES forum and I will post when its up. :)

It isn't THAT revolutionary of a product. Polaroid has had a similar product out for awhile now - WalMart has been selling them. Granted it doesn't have an ethernet port, but it DOES have a DVD burner!

I looked at the Polaroid recorder, if I'm reading correctly is isn't hd, is it?
That, IMO, would make the TR50 a nice unit, and since it has no dvr fee it would be a heckuva lot cheaper to operate than the tivo hd unit.

I wonder who their target audience for this box is? Is there anyone in the US that has broadband but receives TV OTA only? I suppose there may be someone, but would they be interested in the current overpriced offerings from Dish online? Those one or two people probably also know what Bittorrent is.

I would think it might appeal to hd owners with multiple sets who use the set in the bedroom/office/etc as a secondary set but would like to have hd available at a reasonable price. I'm interested in it simply because having more choices gives the consumer more control over what they pay and watch. More competition is great:D I'm looking at having to cut something outta our budget because the dad-blamed cost of insurance has gotten completely outta control, the homeowners rates in Texas have been going up for the last 10+ years, way beyond the rate of inflation:(
And who's medical insurance hasn't gone thru the roof this century::mad:
