Echostar 14 update

So with the spotbeam i.e Colorado, with the new bird is it still going to be MPEG 2, or will they make that spotbeam the HD and move the 129 spotbeam?

The sats are "bent pipes." Doesn't matter what is fed to them, they just send it back. So it's not the sat that determines if it's MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 or whatever.

Everything new to EA is MPEG-4. That no doubt will one day apply to WA. I wouldn't be surprised if they started the process by moving premiums and locals to MPEG-4, just to stagger out the equipment swap outs.

As far as spots from 119 or 129, I doubt that Dish has stated one way or the other.

They'll probably bump up the required numbers for 119 ;)

Ugg that's a load of crap... The min numbers on average are around 65 and they are easy to hit as I'm usually over 70's with no problems but I want a bigger spread of peak from min so I won't have to sit there for too long trying to squeeze numbers out of my Sat buddy so i can move on and not worry about issues in the future such as wind or a kids ball hitting the dish.

so E* can launches a bird and D*'s isn't even operable yet. E* is gonna keep passing up D* in quality

NORAD probably hasn't issued a TLE yet (or it hasn't been updated into that database).
NORAD has indeed released a TLE. In fact, they've released two!

Here's the second:

Space Systems/Loral-Built Satellite for DISH Network Successfully Performs Post-Launch Maneuvers

Mar 22, 2010 10:55:58 (ET)

PALO ALTO, Calif., Mar 22, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) today announced that a satellite it delivered to DISH Network L.L.C. is performing post-launch maneuvers according to plan. The satellite successfully deployed its solar arrays late Saturday night and early Sunday morning following a Saturday launch. Early today, it fired its main thruster in order to start maneuvering into geosynchronous orbit.

"EchoStar XIV is a very powerful and complex satellite," said John Celli, president of Space Systems/Loral. "Many people around the world depend on the reliability of Space Systems/Loral satellites every day, but our success is always a team effort. I'd like to thank the ILS/Proton, DISH Network and EchoStar teams, along with our many suppliers who worked diligently alongside us, to build and launch this exceptional spacecraft."

EchoStar XIV was launched from the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan aboard an ILS Proton Breeze M launch vehicle provided by International Launch Services. When it reaches its final destination at 119 degrees West longitude, the satellite will become a part of the DISH Network fleet, providing direct broadcast services over the continental United States. It will be used to provide expanded high definition (HD) services and added flexibility for DISH Network's more than 14 million direct-to-home (DTH) television subscribers.

EchoStar XIV is based on the Space Systems/Loral 1300 space-proven platform, which provides the power and flexibility to support a broad range of applications. EchoStar Satellite Services L.L.C., a subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation (SATS, Trade ), manages DISH Network's space programs and will begin in-orbit testing of the satellite later this month. With this launch, Space Systems/Loral now has 61 geostationary satellites currently on orbit.

"Are we there yet?"
"Are we there yet?"

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Anyway, with all the shuffling, and perhaps new sats at 119 & 61.5 by the end of the year, does anyone think that we'll end up with stronger signals to the degree that we'll have fewer losses of signal during bad weather, especially snow & ice? Or just not that much of a difference?
