Echo II gone?! (CONFIRMED) (Echostar 2)

What they should do is take over Directv and convert them over to Dish.

Do some reading. Dish did attempt to buy DirecTV. The DOJ said hell no. It was after the DOJ said to pound sand that Rupe came in and bought controlling interest in DirecTV. Which he later sold to Liberty media.

The failed merger cost Charlie and company $600 Mil.

I really don't think Dish would try another merger knowing that the chance of the DOJ changing their mind is slim to none.

I think they could do it and get away with it now as the market conditions have signifigantly chaged sence then. At that time the major players were D*, E* and cable.

Now you have D*, E*, Cable, ATT, Verizon, and Internet based Video over IP. They can now site that there is more than enough compition out there to support the merger, wich was the basis of the denial.

With that said, if sirius and XM can merge and get approval from DOJ, I think that charlie and Liberty media might want to give it another serious go around.

You know you might be right. A second attempt might go through.

At the merger time there was E*, D*, Voom, and cable.

Charlie even offered E* TPS to Voom if the deal was approved.

So you don't really know what would happen.

I myself believe that the $600 mil. breakup fee from the failed merger has left a sour taste in Charlie's mouths about a D* merger.

$600 mil is not chump change.

Ok, The slimline holds up better in a storm, especially with the ridiculously weak 129 sat. 61.5 also sucks in my area. You set up a slimline right, you get great ss that holds as opposed to my 1000.2 and 61.5 that is losing signal in heavy mist.(sarcasm)

I don't have much trouble w/ 61.5 & i'm just accross the chessapeke from 'ya, you sure you don't need a tweak?

Ive tried tweaking, even after the installer. I wanted to use 61.5 over 129 but I actually get slightly better ss's on the 1000.2 at 129 than the 500 at 61.5. Neither are as good as I had in SC. I've always like the At9 and slimline dishes. I know everyone makes fun of them for the size, but they aint bad.

I don't want to hijack the thread so i'll make this my last comment on that... but that's kinda weird, different people over hear have had issues w/ 129, so much, that regular retailers over here quit using them well in advance of Norfolk going up on 61.5...

interesting...

IMHO, EA was a way to move to MPEG4, new subs and any current subs who payed up could have a single dish and all MPEG4. Charlie just needs a new way to get people to pay for the move to MPEG4. After all the premium channels are MPEG4, Aug 1, then start with one DMA at a time, you want locals, you need Vip.

The problem with MPEG-4 is that there are 20-30 million MPEG-2 receivers out there. If you go $100 each to replace you are looking at 2-3 billion dollars. They could put up 10 satellites for that much money. Yes they need customers to upgrade, but they want to do it slowly and spread the cost out. Having customers pay for the upgrade is even better.

Your comments are not conducive to anything, kstuart. It makes one wonder, just what are your intentions...? You're not respectful of Scott's relationship(s) with Dish/Echostar, nor mindful of how and when he's able to comment. Remember, without his established connections, there would be much we wouldn't be privy to.

If you want to live in the world of denial, please do so on your own. Newbies have a hard enough time trying to comprehend discussions here, and you don't help matters, one iota.

To debate, exchange ideas, observations and data, does not promote disinformation.

I don't know if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, but you're being exceptionally negative.

In other words, don't shoot the messenger.

Every one of those statements is false or a mischaracterization.

Very typical of 21st Century communication, where no one ever provides any substantiation for what they say.

I can't post 100 posts to explain why most of the 100 posts in this thread are ludicrous (typical example being the 23428th person to suggest that millions of MPEG2 receivers be swapped for free, showing the huge lack of basic math skills out there).

It was amazing that my post was immediately followed by exactly what I was talking about - someone who had not bothered to actually research why 105 and 121 are not being used...

So, you complain that no one " provides any substantiation", then your big defense for not providing any is that there are too many posts?

Hmmm, funny.

"You guys are so wrong, but theres too many reasons for me to tell you why" :haha

You're the one who predicted last night there probably wasn't anything wrong with E2. Why'd you participate in the discussion given your comment above?

Turns out, the sleuthing and rationale offered by others was right on the mark.

There were about 3 posts from people who had any sort of real reason to think that there was something wrong with E*2, and the rest of the 100 posts were ludicrous nonsense.

If the thread was only about E*2 and whether or not it was dead, then it would have been an intelligent thread...

Thing is, no matter how many satellites Dish can launch, they will still only have a limited number of Ku transponder licenses. Thus, they have a limited amount of bandwidth. Swapping out to MPEG4, even at $3 Billion, will have more of an effect on bandwidth available than launching 10 satellites. Spotbeams will help they better use their bandwidth to provide more locals, but it really doesn't provide more. This is why Directv went to leverging Ka bandwidth on either side of 101. While Dish has played with it, I have yet to hear of any plans for Ka.

At one time Dish had some discussions with DirecTV about doing a transponder swap. But from what I remember DirecTV was being less than reasonable (wanting 6 TPS at 119 for 3 TPS at 110)

Not to mention that DirecTV is actually using those transponders for spanish and locals in many markets. DirecTV would have to migrate all those Phase III dish customers. That's why I proposed DISH leasing capacity on E11 for 110's T28, T30, and T32, so DTV wouldn't have to migrate subs. If those companies ever expect to combine services, they need to start doing some small mutual agreements to test the waters first. DTV is wasting their DTV 5 bird by having it host only 3 transponders. That bird would probably make more money if they could lease it to someone else that was interested in all 32 transponders on it. DISH could use it, and would probably pay a good price that's more than the revenue generated by the 3 transponders in operation at 110.

What VOD channels do you have?

Install tommorrow, EA?
