I have wondered for a while now what happened to this satellite that was supposed to launch. It was said a while back that it was going to be for their own ala carte programming service at the 105.5 slot.
They wanted 105.5 but so far it turned out to interfere too much with DIRECTV's triple LNB dish design. Dish's annual report changed to reflect it would go to an unspecified slot ("An SES Americom DBS satellite, AMC-14, which is currently expected to launch during late 2007 and commence commercial operation at an orbital location to be determined at a future date")
Yeah, I dunno enough about it to know whether its good or bad. I figured "withdrawn" wasnt great though. Unless they decided to change something and are just going to re-file.
It probably means that there was a mistake in the filing that they have to fix before it can be approved. They will probably fix the mistake and refile it.
BTW, the "relaunch" is really for new customers coming in under that program. Current programming will continue on the old satellites for some time. No need for current customers to repoint or replace anything. In fact, there is a drawback to doing that, if you have non MPEG-4 receivers. Like my 508 & 721. So I won't change to any new system until there is something to be gained by doing so, and my old receivers are no longer useful anyway. Anyone wanting to change their existing setup just to have the latest and greatest, with no functional change, will likely be welcome to do so- at their cost.

I think any Dish sub in the the Pacific NW with an MPEG4 receiver will be keenly interested in being able to get HD from anything other than the 129 sat (E5) just as soon as possible.
I'll be repointing if it shows good gains on signal strength and/or resistance to rain fade. Hopefully we'll see an increase in PQ as well.

Dish needs to launch the new satellites in order to add new HD channels.
It is highly likely that once the new satellites are "online" that it will be necessary to point to those locations to receive new HD channels.
So, your statement is true only if you don't want any channels that you don't have today.
BUt if ALL HD is to go mpeg 4 by years end like Scott G. said they might do , they might just move ALL hd to the newer sats and you either upgrade to the mpeg 4 receivers and repoint the dish to the newer sats or you will get NO hd at all. Then again DISH could just leave the hd channels they have now, at the old slots 110/129/61.5 and any newer HD channels will go to the newer sats in mpeg 4 . You pay the same money either way but only get to see the same stuff. So this might just make people upgrade so they will get the most hd for their money. I just hope that DISH doesn't try to jackup the price for the newer hd channels or they will lose all hd customers. Especially since Directv has said NO price hikes for the dozens of hd channels they are supposed to launch in September. I am hoping that Directv will keep the low 9.99 high tech fee and just add hd as they get it for the same price and this will force DISH to do the same. OTher wise they will be at a disadvantage they won't recover from. IF Voom was made ala carte DISH could compete in hd pricing but most would drop it since it is full of repeats of the same stuff over & over again.
Certainly none of the Voom channels have 24 hours a day of new material - or even 2 hours a day.
But they do have new material, and it is usually very unique:
- Only HD transmission of the championship-deciding last Real Madrid soccer match of the season, including HD video of the extravagant celebration afterwards. (This after broadcasting a match in HD every week during the season.)
- Only HD transmission of the new fashion collections each season from Paris, London, Milan, New York and Los Angeles.
- A variety of interesting HD concerts, including new material periodically.
I certainly agree that the some of the channels could be combined:
- Treasure and Gallery
- Monsters and Kung-Fu
- WorldSport and Rush
- FilmFestival and WorldCinema
- Animania and Game
