Voom receiver goes dead this weekend so I called Dish. I asked if they had a promo like Direct's $200 rebate and was told no but then put on hold. After being transferred to an account specialist I was offered to resume my digital home plan with a 921, I did try for the 942, 2 year commitment, $299 with $49 rebated and free HDpack for 6 months. Is this standard for former subs and what about that 921 anyway?

I just paid $500 for a 921, nice receiver. HD DVR, PIP, Two tuner, well, actually 3 tuner, 1 OTA and 2 SAT.

It is not a bad unit, mine works most of the time without any problems. There are some really bad units out there for sure but most are ok. I have read of folks having problems with high def dvr's from all providers so I guess none are flawless.

My thoughts are that anyone owning a 921 will be compensated somehow when newer units hit the market in late 05 or 06.

For 250 or so more you could purchase a 942 which is what I would do in your situation as I hear they are working well. HTH

Actually, I got 942 and 811 after talking with retention department (I was a Dish customer on hold, no programming while subscribing to Voom). $250 + 2 years. First, I was kind of skeptical of this deal, But now with Voom coming back to my house I could not be more happier. :D

The 921 is a nice and fairly reliable box in most areas of the country. I suspect that most of the problems people are having now are with OTA channels that have PSIP information that drives the 921 insane.

DucTape guess what? I called Dish to add a 2nd basic receiver I forgot about at the time and the CSR said that I was scheduled to get a 942 not 921. So I don't need the second box anyway. I've heard so much negative about the 921. I'm assuming that this is good news, right?

Yup that's good news for you indeed. 942 has NBR along with several other upgrades as well as being a much more stable unit from what others are reporting.

I was looking at the PDF pertaining to the 942. I know that it is a dual receiver but I was hoping that it is a dual HD tuner as the sales person told me when I signed up (so I could record in HD while watching another station in HD). The PDF (unless I am reading it incorrectly) implies that TV1 output is HD but TV2 output is SD. Is this the case?
Thanks!

You need to understand the difference between tuners and outputs.

The 942 has TWO satellite tuners and ONE OTA tuner. All three can be used to record SD or HD channels.

It has two outputs, either can show you HD or SD content, but TV2 downconverts HD to SD.

The outputs can be used to see what's happening on the tuners (one limitation IIRC - at the moment, TV2 can NOT see the OTA tuner live). The outputs can also be used to see anything that's already on the HDD.

.

Thanks for your help! I know the difference between a tuners and an outputs. I misinterpreted the following statement from the Dish webpage:

Combined high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) two-tuner satellite receiver that provide several multi-room viewing options and
I took the above line with what I read on the PDF about TV 1 and TV2 without noticing that there is a single vs a dual mode and voila!......a misinterpretation was born.
