DVR530 set up question (Newbie)

I just picked up SC DVR530 and I have a set up question.

On the front panel there is a red button that allows the user to toggle between HD output of 1080i,720p, 480p,480i, and native mode 0000

My tv (Sony 50WE6420) is HD and the manual claims it accepts all of the above numbers.

The DVR530 came with 720p as a default but it showas a square smaller picture on my widescreen, I have toggled the numbers and have notices that the 1080 causes a black screen and the 480 ones cause my DVR to freeze up.

I don't know what number this should be on for best picture and for ease of use with the DVR?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
