It is termed an upfront lease fee. Purchasing the receiver out right will probably cost you almost three times as much as the upfront lease fee.
Why is it that dish wants to charge me 169.00 for a DVR upgrade when I'm just leasing it?
Because they have costs too!
If you could lease a Porsche and a Yugo for the same monthly cost, do you suppose the down payment might be different?
Directv wants 299.99 but sometimes will only ask for 199.99 if you are lucky, just to LEASE the hd dvr receiver.
