DVR R10 - Phone Connection

I just recently acquired a new dvr unit from dircet tv because the hard drive on my last one was fragmented. I am unable to record anything on this on because i do not have a phone line connected to the unit. Do i have to get a land line inorder to use this feature or is there a away to by pass it. I bought my last one second hand, so i did not run into this problem, and i have not had a land line for about 7 years. thanks!

Just take it over to someone's house who does have a landline & finish the phone setup portion over there - it does NOT need to be hooked to a dish to do this, just a TV to watch the menu's. Once you make your test call to a local number, you're all set...
