Considering that DVD-Rs have come a long way, does it make sense to get a DVR? Wouldn't a DVD-R such as the new RCA with commercial skip do almost the same thing, for less money?

Having a standalone dvd recorder is nice( i have a Panny). But to use it as a dvr is kind of like having a glorified vcr, in my opinion. No wishlists or season pass capibility, which makes the dvr much more user friendly.

Very true. But I've decided not to buy the DVR for the moment. It's $400 after the rebate. I'm going to have to get a new one when MPEG4 comes out so it will either be useless or at least not as good. I can buy this DVD-R for half that and wait till the new DVR comes out in the summer and have everything that I should have gotten now, without paying the upgrade fee. Besides that it looks like the new DVR is going to cost less. Maybe, maybe not, but at least I won't pay twice.
