DVR on a standar receiver

I noticed some fta receivers have a usb port for use of a DVR function. I noticed that directv has usb ports on there standards receiver. Do you think that it is possible to make software to use a small mini harddrive to use a standard receiver as a dvr? this is not a hack as it would not be used to alter the ecryption. It would be cool to use a d11-d12 as a dvr.

Or just get a R15/16 or R22 added to the account or replace the D11/12 instead of adding.
