I have been using DVR expanders for years. Max storage is 2 TB and places that have offered them in the past are not available now. What type of expanders on the market work with Dish Network

  • Connected to Hopper: minimum 320 GB, maximum 7 TB (if you are using more than one external hard drive, you cannot exceed more than 6 TB combined)
  • Connected to Wally: minimum 500 GB, maximum 4 TB
  • Connected to other receivers: minimum 50 GB, maximum 2 TB

Using to transfer and need specks of what works.
Transferring is not allowed unless the receiver is on the same account.
External Hard drives can be self contained units or a USB dock with an internal type hard drive in it.
IIRC Dish hardware can use anything from 2 TB to 7TB USB.
What is your purpose for transferring?
External drives are not readable by other devices (computers), only Dish Network DVRs.

I do recall products actually named DVR expanders, but I've only used generic drives myself.

The drives are readable, it's just that the files are encrypted.

So, you can make backup copies and rearrange things if you like, but you can only play the files on a DVR tied to the same account.

Backup using Linux.

I need to find that post….
IIRC you copy the DISHARC folders using LINUX but the drive must still be read by a Dish Network VIP or Hopper receiver on the same account as the original.

The VIP is limited to the VIP722 and VIP622, the VIP211/411 have a totally different drive setup and the 722 and 622 are limited to about a 2GB drive, so stick with the Hopper/wSling and the Hopper3.

Hard Drives I have used in the past were DVR Expanders or external hard drives with USB + eSATA
I am finding hard drives but without the eSATA port, I do need this eSATA correct?
I use these hard drives to move recordings to keep Hopper clean. Hope someone understand and can help me because I am not computer literate and am lost!
