It was 16x9.
Someone on another Forum mentioned that many of the 16x9 HD broadcasts are Open Matte rather than Zoomed, so one cannot tell whether or not one is missing part of the image without comparing to DVD or letterboxed SD...
... which reminded me that I had a TCM letterboxed SD on Ext Drive, so I compared the first minute of each, and the HD broadcast is Zoomed. The first scene at the bar, on the far right of the letterbox is the front of the pin ball machine, which is cut off in the HD. In the HD, you can never quite tell that it is a pinball machine (not that it is relevant to the plot).
The HD broadcast is better quality, but looks to be the same print. I am not sure what is available in the vaults, and their condition, but a new print from the negatives would have greater quality in terms of facial detail, etc.
I also think that people have not strived to make the image more life-like, fearing that would be counter to the overall feel of the plot...
