Have an old dvr40 and use terrestrial antenna for local channels, when the switch comes will I still be able to view or will I have to pay DirecTV, and they don't carry some of them anyway?

If you want to continue using a OTA antenna to receive you local channels for free you will need a DirecTV receiver that can decode the digital OTA channels or a converter box that converts the digital OTA channels to analog to display on your TV.

D* has plans to add most of the remaining local markets in SD before the transition. Hopefully when this happens you can upgrade to their new DVR, and no longer need to use the antenna. This would run $99 or less, maybe free.

If not, you can upgrade to their HD-DVR, which can use the digital signals from your antenna.
That would run $259 with the anteanna adapter.

The free converter boxes won't work well in your situation, they won't integrate with your existing DVR.

Depending on his TV, he may be able to input the antenna into the TV and use it that way if he has a digital tuner in the TV, all newer TV's do.
