First, I already have DVR Advantage (w/AT 200)...
To try and make a long story short -- I have a family and I am concerned about the amount of time my wife, son, and me watch TV. With the upcoming rate increase from DISH, my bill will be over $70. When "I" think about spending over twice as much as I do for my water bill (a real necessity), among other essential bills which cost the same or less than pay TV it truly troubles me. TV is not essential -- to me. Of course -- as with the nature of this beast we call "pay TV" -- there are about 5 channels out of the AT200 package I will truly miss if they are gone. Can I get them on a lower package -- of course not. AT100 has 1 or 2 of them, but not the others -- the Family Pak has the others but not the first 1 or 2. The rising cost of pay TV boils down to priorities. Am I financially hurting and barely squeaking by to pay my other bills to pay my upcoming new DISH bill of $72? No -- it boils down to the amount of time we spend in front of the TV versus doing something more productive. As far as the DVR, I wish I'd never subbed to it. I feel as though I was in a "bait and switch" scenario by taking it -- the CSR to whom I spoke about 2 years ago talked me into the DVR. He said you'll only be paying $1-2 more and you'll love it. Of course, I love it -- but I also love fattening foods and I'm already fat. I have found that my DVR has encouraged me to watch more TV -- so my brain is becoming "fat" on TV.
So, I'm probably leaning toward keeping AT200, dropping DVR, dropping DHHP, and possibly dropping locals because I get excellent over-the-air reception -- my savings would be about $16/month. And I'm not being critical of anyone who spends much more than $70 -- If I was single and/or older, widowed and all alone it wouldn't bother me to spend that. Right now, other things are more important.
So...my intial question was simply whether DISH will just disable the DVR or will they want to swap it out for for a basic receiver? I figure they may want the DVR back and have it for another customer. Just curious as to what DISH typically does in this case.
