I don't know what THE HELL is going on, but suddenly they are in 1st place AND they ARE the hottest team in baseball in the last 2 months.

National League Central Division

salsa, you beat me to it. i was going to start a thread about the cubbies taking over first place in the central (by percentage point(s)). two key elements.........they traded michael barrett, then traded rob brown for jason kendall....an upgrade and the team has gelled.

i'm not too shocked here as i felt they had the talent to win the division. milwaukee came out of the gate strong but have greatly fallen off the pace......not a surprise. i've learned being a reds fan forever......it makes no difference if you're the hottest team in baseball before the all-star break. its the team that plays well in august and september that makes a difference.

I didn't say that. The Cubs have been losers for 100 years. They don't know how to win.

I disagree....THE FRANCHISE have been losers....AND Pinella is not a loser. He is not that stiff Dusty "I am gonna wear out the pitching staff" Baker. I think this is a different team....AND they don't have their best pitchers either....Pryor will not see the light of day until next year....but Woods is just around the corner....that would be like pulling off a huge trade once he comes back.

Good point,
Look what Jim Leyland has done in Detroit :up
Until he got there, you would have NEVER mentioned Detroit as winners since '84 ....

Who's "Woods" -- I do know who Kerry Wood is but not Woods ;)

It will be nice to get Kerry back; but with all the arm troubles he has had is he every going to acheive the greatness he showed hints of in his rookie season?

Not a slam; I am happy to see them atop the standings and want them to stay; but getting Wood back is only a plus if he's effective.

Cheers,

Even if they win the division, which looks like they will, they will still not win the world series. They, the Cubs, are losers, they always seem to blow it at some time or another.

Not riled up....Just think people get too high about the highs and too low about the lows.

Did ANYONE think the Cardinals were the best team in baseball when they recently won the World Series?? I mean everyone thought they were good, but good enough to win the World Series??!!

OPPPSSS....LOL.....

One letter too many....sorry...! Gotta remember, you don't have that ARM KILLER, Dusty Baker running the team this time. He single handedly cut short the careers of both Pryor and Wood....and OUTSIDE of the drunk in St. Louis, Tony La Russa, he is the most overrated manager in the last 30 years. And by getting rid of him, they actually became BETTER once he was gone. I will ASSURE you they will do better AS A TEAM without him, eventhough there was MORE talent on Baker's teams than Pinellas teams.

I'm not saying Dusty Baker hasn't killed some arms, but I thought it was Kerry Wood's high school coach that killed his arm. Hasn't he been on the disabled list for about eight years now?

He has off and on. Different ailments each time.

What's weird is that I recall when Prior was coming up everyone was saying he had perfect mechanics -- but he's been almost habitually on the DL just like Wood.

But Zambrano is one hell of a workhorse ;)

Because Zambrano is a freak of nature. Prior NOR Wood had no or VERY LITTLE history of arm problems until the "arm killer" got hold of them.

Wood came off the DL today....that is HUGE!!! They have not had him ALL year and now they have a healthy Kerry Wood for the stretch run WITHOUT having to give up a player....IF ANY TEAM was able to get a Kerry Wood WITHOUT giving up a player...they would as happy as a pig in slop.

IF...and that is ALWAYS a BIG IF.....Wood finishes the year healthy and a healthy Prior next year....THE Cubs are the best team in the Central and one of the better teams in the National League.....imagine how scary if they add A-Rod.......WOW!
