Dog food help

Well, at least you're taking the next step in trying to find a better dog food.

You're right about Kibble's and Bits. It's probably one of the worst foods you could feed a dog. Full of by-products, fillers and very little to no real meat source. By feeding a dog this type of food, you'll only be looking at possible medical bills down the line due to food related health issues. K&B is like eating a Big Mac for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

And to KAT, don't always trust the Vet. My Vet recommended a well known name brand dog food and it turned out to be crap as well and was one of the foods that were recalled a while ago. Often times, Vets get paid from dog food companies to recommend a certain type of food and get kick backs for doing so.

My best advise is to read the label. Look for real meat (turkey, beef, poultry, etc) to be listed as one of the first sources. Look for food with little to no corn, corn meal, wheat, rice, etc. Also, avoid the foods that have ingredients with the words "meal", "byproduct" or "meat."

Animal by-product is rendered product from animal tissues, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents.

"Meat" is often rendered dogs and cats as well as other animals such as road-kill. When the source of the meat is known it will be listed as beef, poultry, chicken, turkey, etc. If the source of the meat is not known it is simply called "meat".

A publication we trust to decide which food to feed our dog is "The Whole Dog Journal." They do an annual review of every dog food, give their thoughts, grade each food and tell you which foods are safe and perfectly healthy. I don't think this list is available on the web, but is well worth the fee to purchase it.

First, what HD posted is truly disgusting :(

BUT, I've had 3 dogs in my lifetime...The first two lived 13+ years and the current one is 2. They were all fed Pedigree (which I'm assuming is junk). They never had health problems, though....maybe because they've all been half-breeds? Maybe I've just been lucky?

And btw, that "Diamond Pet Food" you listed as a possible replacement was recalled a few years ago. It was linked to the possible death of quite a few dogs. I would steer clear of that as well.....

See I saw that, and the fungus was on corn, the one I listed doesn't use corn.

* No By-Products, No Corn, No Wheat
* Fresh Lamb is the #1 Ingredient
* Antioxidant Formulation
* Balanced Omega Fatty Acids for Skin and Coat
* Small Kibble is Easy to Grasp and Chew
* Natural Formula with Vitamins and Minerals

What kind do you use?

We feed our dog this organic, holistic, dehydrated raw pet food from The Honest Kitchen......

Wheat Free Dog Food, Gluten Free Dog Food? The Honest Kitchen

It contains: Hormone-free chicken, organic flaxseed, potatoes, celery, sweet potatoes, apples, alfalfa, organic kelp, honey, zucchini, green beans, cabbage, bananas, papayas, yogurt, basil, garlic and rosemary.

We usually mix it with this dry food from Fromm's called Chicken A la Veg.

My dog Bailey loves it, is full of energy and hasn't had any health issues to speak of on this diet. In truth, as a "dog parent" I sometime feel as if he eats better than us. :)

Yeah, I see that. But in truth, why would you want to risk going with a company that has been linked to the death of several pets? I sure as hell wouldn't trust that company to provide food for my dog.

Well how can you trust anything that is manufactured, look at peanut butter now.

The guy who told me about this said the naturals wasn't the affect ones.

I don't know if this sounds harsh, but I wont spend a lot of money on dog food, all my pets growing up used purina foods, and they a lived a long live.

I'm willing to spend a little extra for food, but I wont spend a ton, I can't afford that.

Yeah, food processing of both human and pet consumption is a very risky field these days. A lot of garbage being sold and loose restrictions to make matters worse.

You asked for advise and I gave you my tid bid of info I had on the subject. In the end, it's up to you to do what's best for you and your dog. I'm sure you'll make a fine choice. :)

Right now I'm feeding my dog Kibble N Bits, but I heard that it's not good for the dog.

A pet store recommended "Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Dog Lamb & Rice Formula".

Diamond Pet Foods : Products : Diamond Naturals : Dogs : Dry Food

Wasn't Diamond one of the dog foods recalled for killing dogs, did they fix the problem, and is it safe now?

Thanks for any help.

Want to know how old my dog is and what I have fed him from day one? Innova Dog Food

My Sheltie just turned 15 and in excellent health. The food cost more but it's worth it. He's been eating it for years.

As for asking your vet be careful. Some get paid to promote the food .

And I appreciate it, you are the only one that did. I have choices to make, but either way I will have to make a decision.

I found a dealer in my area that sells the brand you listed, I'm going to find the place and see how much it is.

Innova is good stuff. We used to feed our GSP that until just recently, simply because it gave him really bad gas. Besides that, he seemed really healthy on it and loved it.
