Does the "Auto" timer type NOT record to the DVR?

I think I may have figured out why my programs weren't being recorded.

I'm using the "Auto" timer type which I thought meant it will record to the DVR if the receiver is off, otherwise it will simply switch to the channel.

Does "Auto" NOT record the DVR at all?

If this is true, it seems pretty useless. Why not just use "DVR" all of the time?

I don't always want to record something, just retune to the right channel.

AUTOmatic tuning is quite useful - IF my wife or family happen to be watching something but I want to make sure the tuner switches to a game so I don't miss kick-off / tip-off, AUTO changes the channel for me so I don't have to stand over the machine while grilling, talking on the phone, or telling other ViP622 users to read page 62 in their 622 User's Guide to learn more about how to use their DVR.

"Auto" is a terrible term for that. It should be called "Tune" or something like that.

To me, "Auto" means it would automatically tune to the tunnel OR record it.

If the DVR is off, Auto is doing nothing for me...

It would seem MUCH more useful to record the program if the DVR is off. Otherwise, it is assuming you are currently watching TV at the moment of the timer.

Auto will turn on the STB for the show if it's off, tuning to the correct channel. DVR functions will work whether the DVR is on or off. Just a matter of learning the terminology and how it works.

Useless ?? What's useless is that manual Dish provided you that details exactly what the term(s) means. Besides, why would you intentionally change the default setting without knowing what the setting you used does ??

From the manual, page 66:

Timer Types

  • DVR - Records an event onto your receiver for later viewing.
  • Auto - Automatically changes the channel for live viewing of the event.
  • Reminder - Creates an on-screen reminder when the event is about to start.

Are you saying that "Auto" will record to the DVR?

Yeah, I'm confused, heh.

No. DVR functions will work on whatever channel you are tuned to except for the record. The functions are initiated in the buffer. You can back up 1 hour or to the beginning of the program and record from there. But using 'Auto' on the DVR setup screen will not setup a recording.

I use 'Auto' when there's a show coming on in 10 or 15 minutes that I want to watch live but I don't want to watch what's on that channel while I'm waiting.
I mess around on other channels and don't have to keep an eye on the clock because the receiver switches the channel when the show comes on. It's a pretty cool feature I think.

That recording the buffer thing is a different matter. I would prefer that it record what's in the buffer without having to rewind and I also wish the second tuner ran a second buffer. I'd like to be able to swap tuners and then back up to watch what I missed on that tuner. I'd also like to be able to hit 'pause' and then swap tuners while the first one built up a buffer.

And the Auto function works good for those who would like to record to a DVD or VCR tape (VHS for middle ages and Beta for the Cave Man) and have it to take with them or watch it again when the 622 starts to overwrite.:D
