The title pretty well sums it up. If I got basic cable to get the HD locals, can the 811 decode them or would I need a cable box?

I'm in a dead zone for OTA & cable is about my only option for locals in HD.

The short answer is No. As gary said you will have to get a cable box and connect it to your DVI or component. It would create a two TV input solution.

Most HD on cable requires a Digital Cable tuner with HD. So No

Long Answer: the ATSC tuner in the 811 receives 8VSB, not QAM, which is what cable uses.

OTA Channel Guide - will it ever happen?

DVI cable?
