Blinkx.tv Adds Akimbo Content
October 25, 2005
By Mike Shields
Blinkx, a startup video search engine, has signed a deal with video-on-demand company Akimbo to include its programming within blinkx's search listings.
Under the new agreement, users of blinkx.tv will be able to search for Akimbo programming, including shows from the History Channel and the Food Network, and view it on various broadband-enabled video devices, including the Akimbo Player and Microsoft Windows Media Center.
Unlike video-on-demand programming --which is delivered to TVs via cable set-top boxes-- Akimbo's service is designed for broadband-connected television. Users subscribe to the Akimbo service and then connect the Akimbo player or a Windows media player to their TV sets.
The company currently claims a library of 5,200 titles from 80 different channels, though few premium programs from the major broadcast networks.
That library would seem to be what has attracted Blinkx, which launched earlier this year. The company has been attempting to offer Internet users the ability to quickly find video programming through search, but has thus far lacked a significant content database.
