Does 211 require phone or internet connection?

I have a 211 I am going to hookup in my basement but I have no phone or internet down there yet (it is unfinished). Does the 211 need to be connected to a phone line or to the internet to avoid extra fees? I also intend to add a hard drive to it to make it a DVR.

No, only dual tuner receivers need to be hooked up to a phone line or Internet. I too have a 211 and am contemplating the DVR upgrade as well. There are numerous posts here on the subject and you might want to study them carefully before proceeding.

Thanks, jpmarto. I will take a look around. I bought a 500GB drive the day after Christmas, so I thought I would hook it up up to the 211.
