Do I need anything to add an IR remote?

I just got my install completed yesterday. I got 2 HR22s installed to my two HD sets.

I am modulating the output of my box downstairs to a couple of SD sets. What I need to know is, what do I need to have IR remotes working? Do the HR-22s have IR remote support out of the box, or do I need to order an antenna?

Also, I assume that the remotes that come with the boxes are RF-only, correct?

Some HR2x units have the RF antenna built in, no external one. Those that are RF capable need to have that ability turned on. Once done, the remote will no longer be able to use IR for control.

You will need RF remotes, not IR, to control the DVRs from another room. The HR22 has the antenna built-in. In the setup menu there is a setup for enabling RF. Directv has both IR-only and IR/RF remotes. If it is capable of RF, there will be a FCC label on the remote. You can buy additional RF remotes from Directv for $25 ea. There are no suitable aftermarket RF remotes.

Yeah, got my acronyms mixed up there unexpectedly :)

I did mean an RF remote setup. Both my HR22s came with remotes that have the FCC ID sticker on the back. (That should have been the obvious clue that they were RF!)

So I'll just need to set up the remotes in my distant room to pair with whichever HR22 I want to control, correct?

Yes. In the remote setup menu it will show the serial number of the receiver to enter into the remote.
