Even ESPNews was only turned off for a few weeks when the same thing happened (I think it was last year).

You think Dish wont do it? Think again. Dish may very well set an example for anyone else that may choose to do the same. The amount of money they would save in the future by setting this example would make up for what they would lose as a result of the channels being dropped (if it happens).
Dish may also see this as a test to see how many subscribers may actually drop the service as a result to see how they can afford channel drops in the future to make room for other channels for HD or to keep prices down, to see what the market will allow.

My guess is Cartoon Network is the biggest reason turner wants a price increase. The Adult Swim block has beat network television ratings (I.e. Leno and Letterman) several times. Combine that with the fall of network cartoons in general and there's a lot of ratings to be made. That means ad prices go up.
It should be noted Dish Network does comercial inserts on most of their channels. My guess is Dish is already getting additional revenue selling Cartoon Network slots. Turner I'm sure is trying to take advantage of the operators. Still, it's not hitting dish as hard as you think.

Makes you wonder what channels will be threatened to be dropped next year, who the next scape goat will be.
If anyone finally starts dropping channels instead of just threatening to do it THEN we might finally see some changes. It will be interesting to see if all of those Discovery multiplex channels survive at the next contract renewal, especially if they ask for more money. Trio is kind of in the same place now as ABC Family was last year. The network had just changed hands, gotten a new name and program lineup. Trio is about to undergo that with the Universal/NBC merger. I think Trio will survive on D* and we may even see it come to E* in the near future. All the Turner channels will probably likewise survive this round of contract renewals. The one thing that is probably driving the major price increases this year is the same thing that almost caused the loss of TNT last year - the NBA basketball rights.
The NBA TV contract was by far the biggest fraud in the history of sports television. This contract circumvents capitalism and should make any TRUE REPUBLICAN outraged worse than anything. THIS IS WORSE THAN ANY FORM OF SOCIALISM EVER. At least with socialism there is accountability in the vote, not here. There is no way to say no to the NBA contract. Even if not a single person went to a single NBA game or bought a single piece of merchandise teams could pay out almost 50% of their players salaries. The NBA is a complete fraud.
