I just got a new tv, but now the dishtv remote does not respond when I try to tune the volume. Other features like channeling and accessing 'guide' work, but in order for me to tune the volume I have to use the remote that came with the new tv. I had no such problem with my old tv. Is there some kind of installation procedure I have to set up that allows my dish tv remote to function correctly?

Yep - you're gonna need your manual. You can either scan thru all the codes, or there are specific codes listed in the back of the manual by tv manufacturer. It's about a four step process.

1. Turn on tv
2. Press and hold down the TV button until the other function buttons light up.
3. Press the main power button once.
4. Repeatedly press and release the up arrow button until the tv turns off.
5. Press the # button once, the tv button will flash three times and you should be good to go.

If the power button starts flashing repeatedly you have gone through all of the codes and the remote will not operate your particular brand of tv.

The brand of your tv is?
Let's assume it an LCD tv....But that doesn't matter because the codes don't change that much..
Here are some codes ..
Sony 500.
JVC 557
Samsung 738
Sharp 605
Toshiba 617
Mistubishi 504
Panasonic 700
Vizio 627.
Olevia..unkown
Sanyo...590
Sylvania 569.

If nothing else works you may need to get a new Dish 21.0 learning remote.

No Dish remote ever worked with an Olevia HDTV until this one. Call Dish and order one for $19.95 plus S&H. Sales tax may apply in some areas.

I bought one a couple of weeks ago for my Olevia set and it works great.

I tried to program the new remote to learn a tv that I have encountered before. The brand is not on the tv anywhere. The insignia is a "D" in the shape of like a swoosh. I checked th back panel and the brand is not on there. SO I followed the instructions that I got from this site and printed out to the letter. Tried three times. The New Dish remote would not learn the tv...The tv remote did work so it wasn't a bttery issue or anything like that. SO who knows. Maybe I have found a tv that is not compatible..I wasn't going to bash my head against wall to get it to work.

The insignia sounds like the Durabrand/Walmart brand. The TV should be either Emerson, Sylvania or Symphonic.

In short, you should be able to find the right code... but I know you know what you are doing.
