i see. but why isn't it the same story with the SD versions? is it strictly the fact that the HD chans use a lot more bandwidth? is there no 'distant networks' service available in HD? any info is appreciated.

DIRECTV has Distant Networks in HD. DiSH Network is forbidden by Court Order.
C'mon... we've been promised those since 2006. You really think they are gonna turn them on just because they SAID they would?
My patience is just about up with E*. I stated I would switch by oct 1 if they didn't get msg-hd by then, so I could watch the sabres games in hd, however, I am sick of E*'s b.s. and smug attitude, and if our locals are not here by the end of my current billing period, I will be on D* using their AAA discount and member referral.
You keep threatening to move. I dont think E* is going to get MSG HD anytime soon. Make the switch. Happy I did.

PS To earlier poster - If you go to Satellite Guys DirecTV General Forum, there are lots of threads about best deal for adding DirecTV. If you are AAA member, you get $240 off (over 24 months) in addition to all other current DirecTV new customer discounts. Be sure to read the AAA thread to get all possible discounts. From what I remember reading, the key is knowing all the discounts available and then making sure the CSR knows that you know - and gives you all of them.
When someone said "the Voom channels are still broadcasting video on the transponders, it's only in the table that they have been removed" - were you looking at both 61.5 and 129 ? Or just 61.5 ? (I need that data for a theory...)
My speculation is they need to let them stay for now until they are legally cleared to remove them, and then we will see more new HDs added in their place.
Actually, I see it going in the direct opposite way. Though Rainbow Media isn't obligated to publicly state how much money they've spent on "new" programming, the $100 million dollar mark is very low. As I have been employed for many years at an NBC/ABC/WB affiliate cluster, agreement's like the one that was made with Rainbow and Echostar often don't have a clause saying how the $100 million dollars is overly defined towards "new programming". (Therefore, no micromanaging of a company from another company.)(Read the public agreement, the official agreement is also available for everyone to see via fcc.gov and ftc.gov if you don't know where to find it.)
Take into consideration that they have to pay a sound crew, film crew, producers, cast members and equipment for each new program. $100 million dollars is chump change in this industry. Shoot, I drowned an HD field camera last year in a storm, and it alone cost nearly $8000. (Thank god it didn't come out of my pay check!) Also, buyouts of popular shows, series, and movies add up. And lets not forget, VOOM had a 24 hour channel of news. It costs a lot to operate a live channel or a live delay channel (as such with HDNews and the Weather Channel.)(Sorry to break it to you, the Weather Channel is far from live...)
Honestly, in my opinion of understanding the business aspect of the communications world, Echostar will be obligated to complete its 15 year agreement with Rainbow soon, unless there is something else that Echostar has up it's sleeve. Give it time, I'm sure VOOM HD Networks will be back with us.
Give it time (soon anyone?), and continue to complain to Dish Network, I think they'll start listening real soon.

djclay made an interesting point about the cost of programming. As I recall, A&E paid $2.5 million per episode to broadcast reruns of "The Sopranos." At 90 or so episodes, thats a lot of money for just one show. As a Voom fan, I hope Dish comes back with an amended agreement to put some of the Voom channels back on the air. The ones I watched, naturally, like Kung Fu, and Monsters. I don't think Chillers and WFN will be too good a trade for those channels. (Although WFN has its own place.) I also want the Pentagon channel in HD. And MilitaryHD.
Actually, Dish has a pretty good HD package. I'll probably have to hire someone (maybe my daughter) to watch some of the shows I haven't gotten to so she can tell me if they are worth the time. But she has a day job....

It costs the companies with the ad's alot to have them on the air.The more popular the show the more money the ad is.And A&E is not short on ad's
