Dish won't activate my receiver, why??

I haven't been taken to the cleaners yet, I paid with payal and it's guaranteed for $200, so I can file a complaint and get my money back. However, I really want to be able to use this receiver. I think the problem lies within dish, their stupidity somewhere. How can they not activate a brand new receiver I purchased?

Please, the posters here are correct. Dish will not, CAN NOT, activate anymore 721's due to a civil court action by Tivo. For Dish to activate a 721 would be in VIOLATION of a court order. Can you now see the picture?
Dish is done with 721's and will only support current 721's that have been in operation since the court order took effect. A few other, older STB's are affected as well.

We are sorry, but someone ripped you off. I hope you are successful in getting your money back and Ebay takes appropriate measures to prevent people from selling what they know is now a worthless product.

The posters here are correct????? Which ones? I see some that are absolutely incorrect and a few that contain misinformation and confusion.

Exactly how did the OP get ripped off?

If the seller knew the 721 would not be activated by Dish: A rip off.

If the seller didn't know (please, I suppose I am cynical, but I believe he did) the 721 would not be activated, but is now aware of that fact: a rip off if the seller does not return the money to the buyer. It is not right to sell someone a product that will not "work," "function," as was implied by putting the item up for sale, by whatever means, and is now a paperweight. Reputable companies have recalls, and if they don't can face legal action from the regulatory agencies. A person with honor and a great sense of right and wrong would gladly return the money; others would not. It really is a simple principal for any mature adult to comprehend and should not require much explanation. The best of luck for our intrepid 721 owner and I hope he is made whole.

I did

Good luck getting the money back from Paypal. I don't know anyone thats been successful in doing it.

Dish is prohibited BY LAW activating that model receiver.

I got money back thru paypal On a stolen card for a Directv receiver a few years ago. Then the dealer in the area that the card contacted me and had me give him a statement about the incident and the illegal cards were tracked to an employee's friend and the cops took care of the rest. :eureka

Major-V, you are coming in here with great authority in all of your 29 posts, and telling those of us that have been following this issues with great interest for years that we are uninformed and trying to mislead the OP.

We have been discussing this for some time. When the court orders came out, we investigated the implications using both front door and back door methods. We were clearly informed that these receivers would be allowed to remain in service as long as they were never deactivated. Transferring accounts involves a de-activation, followed by a new activiation. This was disallowed by specific wording in the court order.

If Dish is allowing this, it is at odds at what we were told WHEN WE ASKED THIS VERY QUESTION to our dish contacts. If Dish is allowing this transfer, they are treading on very thin ice with the courts. Of course, that seems to be par for the course at Dish these days. However we have not seen an example reported where a 722 was transferred to another account since the order was issued.

Major-V, please show a little respect to members that have devoted considerable time to these issues and are only trying to be helpful. If you have new or different info, good. Feel free to contribute. However, the badmouthing was inappropriate.

I've never seen so much MIS-INFORMATION in one thread in my life.

Seriously, some of you need to do your research before you go running off on a wild tangent.

...I've bought and SOLD my old receivers on Ebay without a problem -- EVER. You do NOT need to be a retailer to get a good deal or be "safe" in a transaction.

Also, 721s reportedly can be activated as long as they are "in the field" per my interpretation and understanding of the injunction. Now, this may change in a moment's notice, but so far, that's what it appears to be.

Oh and before I forget: 721s are dual tuner MPEG2 SD DVR receivers. And there are plenty for sale on Ebay. And not everybody on that site is trying to pull a fast one.

Seriously. Enough with the misinformation. Thank goodness the OP didn't listen to anyone in this thread.

Actually there is plenty of factual information in the posts about the 721 and the Tivo injuction. If you so sure your correct in your info, please post a reference.

Also, a buyer of a used satellite receiver should always call E* and check if the reciever they want to buy is in the clear. From Ebay or anywhere else. The OP didn't do this, but luckily it seems to have worked out for him.

The number of posts has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the misinformation in this thread.

I have first hand knowledge whereby a 721 on a certain someone's account was permitted a transfer -- PERIOD. And that was just a few weeks ago. No back door tricks, no trying to pull a fast one. No trying to circumvent anything.

The injunction and my understanding of it forbids Dish to sell or put into service any "new" 721 receivers. But you know what? My interpretation means squat. That's for Dish to interpret and it's for their legal team to advise. Who cares what I or anyone thinks that injunction means? It's irrelevant.

FURTHERMORE, the OP just stated that he transferred this receiver and it activated on his account. Therefore, everyone that stated it could not be done stands corrected. And wrong advice and misinformation was given to the OP like someone who said that the 721 was/was not a MPEG4 receiver.

...I can't believe people are still arguing that the OP "cannot" activate the 721 even after he just said that he did.

You are correct. There's no arguing whether or not someone read that injunction and did some research or whether or not everyone should always check receivers before bidding on Ebay.

The OPs original post was about why Dish would not allow his receiver to be activated. Later on down the line, the OP found out why (cause it was still active under the old account) and successfully transferred it.

Major ?
Are you mistyped ?
"misinformation was given to the OP like someone who said that the 721 was/was not a MPEG4 receiver".
That still ABSOLUTELY CORRECT information !

I know it's not a MPEG-4 receiver, it's MPEG-2. :D

I saw a post earlier that stated to the OP the reason he wasn't able to activate it was because it did or did not have MPEG-4 (cause dish is moving to MPEG-4 only in HD).

I think people confuse it with the 722 (just one number makes a big difference).

It was me that suggested that might be a possibility. But I also said I was wrong in post #22. I don't have a problem admitting when I'm wrong.

OK, who was the big 'know it all' that informed everyone that DISH couldn't activate 721 receivers because of a patent issue? The seller finally got back to me, and come to find out, the receiver was in his name somehow. DISH offered to activate it under my account by his request. Remember the remarks "DISH won't activate new 721" ?? Looks like I wasn't take through the cleaners after all! A little research next time before posting suggestions might help.
If it was under his name then it wasn't new

Before I deactivated my 721, I inquired as to whether it could be reactivated later because of the Tivo lawsuit. E* engineering, to whom I was transferred, said it could be reactivated and that only never-activated virgin receivers were covered by the agreement.

OK folks - read THIS.

And THIS.

Or perhaps you'll believe the release from Dish:

Re: CLARIFICATION TO NOTICE OF AMENDED FINAL JUDGMENT AND
PERMANENT INJUNCTION
This is a clarification of the "Notice of Tivo Injunction" that was sent this morning. DVR
models 501, 508, 510, 522, 625, 622, Homezone 622, and 722, have all received the
redesigned software and can continue to be sold, installed and activated. With respect to
those models, no further action is necessary on your part at this time. However, the 721,
921, 942 and Homezone 1022 models did not receive the redesigned software. Because
the injunction goes into effect today, any existing inventory of those models that has not
yet been installed or activated for a customer cannot be installed or activated in the field.
721, 921, 942 and Homezone 1022 models that are already installed and activated are not
subject to the injunction and can continue to be used by customers.

which you can link to from here. Click on the purple word "notices" in the phrase "two notices sent out by Dish."

In short, IF a 721 is activated today, it is done so in error, or something about the injunction has changed that we don't know about (doubtful). Or what Laddyboy heard is true, which is a somewhat different interpretation from what we've heard before.

Thank you for this post. :)

I hope it helps OTHERS who are planning to buy a 721 from online auction sites or a retailer (provided there are retailers selling used 721s).

The KEY points in your post are the fact that this does NOT affect 721 receivers that are already "in the field" activated and installed. This only affects DISH not being able to deploy any more into the field. NO WHERE does it say CUSTOMERS are barred from using, deactivating or reactivating receivers that they already own -- if it did, I'm pretty sure the customers would have received some notice from Dish or a court about this. Therefore, it's OPEN to interpretation. Therefore, I WILL go with Dish's interpretation of said order.

This "error" is only in the eye of the beholder at this point.
