Mike, I'm also under the impression that a 422 is a MPEG-4 322, NOT a DVR. It's even numbered that way.

Announcing 11 new VOOM channels coming to the Dish HDTV channel lineup seems to me to easily fit within this topic area. Particularly given that the announcement is tied to the release of upcoming mpeg-4 receivers.
I sure hope Dish can release a reliable 962 by early 2006. But I can't forget the 921 saga (or 721 for that matter) where it was released almost 2 years behind initial projections and was terribly unstable.
Let's hope the 962 can follow in the footsteps of the 942.
Let us also hope that current subs can get it for a reasonable price, like say on a nice $300'ish lease. I'm fearful that it will come out at $999 with no other option for us.

You are probably right that it is the replacement for the 322. It really wouldn't make sense to release a mpeg4 replacement for the 522/625 receivers. It would make more sense to just use the 962 as the replacement for the 522/625/942 receivers.
So from that logic we can conclude that the 411 will be the single tuner replacement for the 301/311/811 receivers. The 422 will be the dual tuner replacement for the 322 receiver. The 962 will be the dual tuner /dvr replacement for the 625/942 receivers.
It sounds like an awesome undertaking to replace all the receivers that are out there. Will they start with the high definition receiver, 811, and then work their way to the others? What would you think the logical progression would be from a logistical point of view?
All hd receivers first , and I don't know what order, then in the next 2 -3 year the sd receivers. ALL receivers will be replaced as Dish will be going ALL mpeg4 on it's programming by the end of 2008 or early 2009.

I'd guess that, based on rollout history of the 921 and 942, the 642 will be "introduced" in January 2006 and appear in the channel for people to actually obtain sometime next spring, perhaps March at the earliest. I strongly suspect they will model the marketing after the 942 program -- ownership option for around $450 to $500 or lease with an "acquisition fee" of $150 to $200. They will have to have pricing in this ballpark to stay competitive with DirectTV.

Although I have cautioned consistently in the past against "counting Dish's MPEG4 chicks before they are hatched", I think this announcement about Rainbow inking a deal with Echostar to carry the Voom 21 may be the impetus that keeps Dish honest. Rainbow is not going to sit around and twiddle their thumbs waiting on Dish to get their act together on a MPEG4 receiver. Or, at least I would think that would waste a lot of valuable jack. So, it stands to reason that if the deal is signed then Dish must have a solid plan that will go into action at or about the planned date of deployment.

Nothing has been said (that I've read) that E* will be making the V* 21 receivable by customers by a certain time. It will surly be receivable by other MSOs for their distribution. Dishnetwork is Voom's channel for wholesale distribution.
I was just wondering if and when E**** goes to mpeg4 ,if I have the 811 which I do will they do the upgrade with a non-dvr and if I want the HD receiver with the DVR do I need to upgrade to the 942 now. Just wondering how thats going to work! Thanks.

Sign me as optimistic that the other V* channels will appear on Rainbow-1 (61.5) before anything MPEG-4 actually happens. Remember, the bandwidth is sitting there unused right now.

Well , Charlie said before, that there would be no more hd channels till next year and the mpeg 4 conversion , and then he added 10 Voom channels in May. So he could add the other 11 channels by Fall . Especially if he wants to keep stringing us along till the mpeg 4 conversion gets going. He could also adjust the price to reflect the new addition of the other Voom channels. Then he could say Dish is still adding national hd content while Directv is just adding those old hd networks.
Dish will have to do something to compete for the holiday season dollar. What? It depends on what D* and, to a lesser extent, cable have planned.
