Dish will Launch the remaining 11 Voom HD Channels in MPEG4 early in 2006

The first quarter would be from Jan - March , so I suspect between those 3 months we will receive our hd mpeg4 receivers so we can actually see the new mpeg Voom channels. My question is what will the cost be for the whole pack of channels? Of course the other BIG question is how will they switch out our hd receivers and who much $$ will that cost?

How many cruise the Voom forum? Not too many is my guess. Should the Voom forum be a subset of this HDTV forum?

Thanks, I hadn't seen it yet.

The VOOM DBS Forum serves as an archive to the former service provider. Also, there are still a fair number of VOOM receivers still serving as duty as OTA tuners so don't expect the VOOM Helpdesk and VOOM "In You Area" Forum to go anywhere.

The VOOM 21 Programming Forum is an "odd ball" and can be placed in either the VOOM or HDTV Forums. As time passes, I would imagine it will be moved over the to the HDTV Forum. I frequently check-out the VOOM 21 Programming Forum, but everything is linked to the HDTV Homepage which makes navigating HDTV programming a breeze.

Does anybody know what these recieveers will look like/be called ie: 822, 952, etc? I think dish will really have to dance in terms of product development. Also since Eldon and E* are parting ways, whose driving the train in terms of R&D/product developement?

The receivers will be named :
411 which will replace the 311/301/811 receivers.
422 which will replace the 522/625 sd receivers.
962 which will replace the 942/921 hd receivers.

From what I have read elsewhere , all of the receivers will be do both hd /sd or hd downcoversion to sd tvs. I think this is so that all customers can access the hd channels as well , which means more money for Dish. The 962 will have the capacity to do 100 hours of hd supposedly, and will be made for multiple hd tvs. I saw the 411 and heard about the 422 from the CES show pictures that Scott posted. The 962 I read about at another website I can't find now.

I am not positive but I thought the 422 was the MPEG-4 version of the 322, a HD receiver with two tuners but no hard drive. Dish does need to try to limit the number of new receiver models out there because it is costly to maintain the various software versions for each model.

I'm glad it was posted here. I've never visited the VOOM forum. This is Dish HD news to me.
This is Dish HDTV news, however it should be limited to discussions regarding the DISH Demo channel, current or planned HD channel lineups, bandwidth and PQ issues. All other posts should be placed in the appropriate HDTV Forum or programming thread.

If DISH works like DirecTV we will STILL be waitng for our mpeg- 4 receivers this time next year. HOpe they can pull it off.
I have a feeling the vast majority of existing customers will be waiting for their MPEG-4 STBs until 2007 - E* and D* included. Heck, I waited almost a year for VOOM to release an MPEG-4 add-on module for their STB...and they only had 100k receivers actively deployed. I have been an E* customer for the past 4 months and have no complaints (love that 942). I didn't like paying $250 for the privilege of leasing their HD DVR, but overall it has been worth the money. Having said that, I do not expect E* to come to the rescue and rapidly implement MPEG-4 and upgrade my receivers....certainly not without taking a huge divot out of my wallet.

Fortunately, I have never been a D* customer either. I am certain they will offer new customers a really sweet deal w/brand new MPEG-4 receivers. Being that I am from DMA 008 and will be one of the first areas to migrate to MPEG-4, I will be giving D* a serious look in the spring. Likewise, my wife has never been a E* customer so perhaps she could sign-up and be offered free MPEG-4 receivers. Also, Verizon Fios is coming to town and perhaps they will be offering video services by next summer. My point is there will be plenty of options for video programming next year. If E* can provide me with the most HD programming and reliable MPEG-4 hardware at no-cost or low-cost, then I will gladly continue service. If not, then I will select the provider offering the most bang for my buck.

Does this mean the VOOM 11 channels will be encoded in MPEG-4 or just that they will be implemented when they switch over to MPEG-4? Based on VOOM's intent to make the entire VOOM21 part of an MSOs basic HD package, perhaps E* may be keep them MPEG-2 for a while.

MPEG4, the great white whale. Who knows. MPEG4 has almost become urban myth. Its all coming but there are no sightings of hardware or definitive plans. End of the year might be clearer but right nows its anyones guess what national channels will be in MPEG4 on both Dish or Directv.

This could be true , I am only going on what I have read or seen elsewhere. The only picture of anything I have seen that has already been made is the 411. I have seen no pictures of the 422 or the 962.

I don't know why they just don't take the time to make all receivers like the 962 and do away with all the rest. You could make the 962 do connections for both hd and s-video , composite as well . Then you would have the ability to use it on a regular sd or hd tv and then all Dish customers would have a harddrive that could do Video on Demand as well. They could also add hd programming as well , even when they don't have an hd tv.

With the way Dish releases new receivers , I would think that we will see the 411 and the 962 by the end of the first quarter next year. The 962 will most likely be nothing more than a 942 that has a mpeg4 chip in it. They might even just modify the existing 942 receivers and change the front door on the smart card slot and have it say mpeg4 rather than mpeg2. This would cut down on the cost of making , the new 962 receivers. The description I got about the 962 came from a website that sells jvc, as well as other brands, not just Dish. They could be exaggerating the things the 962 can do.

I time will tell. There is only 4 months left of this year. Next year should be a good year for hd, once the mpeg4 conversion is over for hd customers.

According the Dish they will be adding the mpeg4 versions of Voom by "early next year". This would mean they need to do the hd mpeg4 trade outs by the end of this year so they could actually have somebody be able to see the rest of the Voom channels in mpeg4.

My guess it that you will see a 962 between January- March of next year. This would put it in the first quarter of 2006. If they delay in the transition then Directv will most likely get ahead of them in the hd game . Directv will follow the same path in trading out their hd customers first as well. It will be a race to see who gets there first. My bet is Directv will get there first since they have the backing of Rupert's $$ and Newscorp's $$ as well.

IF Directv does as it has promised and trades out all mpeg2 hd receivers for Free hd mpeg4 receivers and Dish doesn't follow, then I imagine a lot of people will churn. I know I will certainly think about it. I think I have paid enough to have the latest hd receivers from Dish. I paid full price for the $1,000.00 921 piece of crap receiver and full price for the two decent 942 receivers at $699.00 a box. I really don't want to hear about Dish offering me an upgrade with some new contract or pay an upgrade fee AGAIN like with the leased 522.

That is really where the question lies; Not whether you will get a 962 but if it will come with more costs.
