Dish receiver programming

Must an extra Dish receiver (from Goodwill) be programmed, or can I simply connect it to my system?

You'll have to call dish to get it activated using the unique receiver and smartcard numbers.

If your luck is like mine, it's a leased one and they won't let you add it.

The fact it ended up at Goodwill is suspect to me.
