I've thinking of signing up for dishn etwork satellite TV service. I've been browsing these forums for a long time and decided to get dish network satellite TV since it looks like the best value for me. I haven't had cable for a while now since they gave me a bunch of stuff because i was stealing and me to pay for converter in each room of my house when I only need a converter on my hidef tv and wanted basic analog cable on the rest since they were analog TV's. So anyway now that I've decided on Dish Network whats programming packages are best I don't really want the Top 60 because it doesn't all the basic cable networks and some of the news channels that we watched and some channels like amc, tcm, and that we watched for movies so I'm debating between the Top 120 and the Top 180 but can't decide is there enough added channels to make the Top 180 worth getting or should I get the Top 120 with HD?

Also I got estimates on my monthly bill one was for the top 120 with HD as follows:

$39.99 for Top 120 with Locals
$5.00 for Digital Home Advantage 322 Dual Tuner receiver
$9.99 for HD PAK
$54.98 Total Monthly Cost

And For Top 180 with HD I got:
$49.99 for Top 180 with Locals
$5.00 for Digital Home Advantage 322 Dual Tuner receiver
$9.99 for HD PAK
$64.98 Total Monthly Cost

Are they pretty accurate estimates for the monthly cost? Finally would Dish Network allow me to save money by dropping my locals? I am wondering this since my antenna on my roof picks up all my local stations with crystal analog image quality and I'm assuming very good digital over the air as well since the analog quality is perfect for all stations. They don't seem to offer the digital home advantage anywheres without the locals only with the locals because $50 a month would be too bad since its only $3 bucks more than comcast basic I had and I would get my hi definition programming as well and more channels including music I didn't get before. A pretty savings for me and I know 180 is good savings as well since my neighbor pays comcast like 62 dollars for basic digital cable without hi-def and not as many channels. So an information and advice you you guys have would be worth it.

Thank You,
Henry

Hey Henry, welcome to SatelliteGuys!

The $5 charge will be for the 811, but it's all the same thing, so that's correct.
And you also wont have to worry about paying for the HD pack for the first 6 months.

With Digital Home Advantage you have to pay for the locals pack, whether you want them or not, so no.

AT180 gives you 37 additional channels, so that might be a value to you.

Actually in DHA you don't pay anything for the locals the additional $5 is the lease fee for the first receiver, that is why there is no difference wether you take the locals or not.

Well it's just how you look at it, one could say you don't pay anything for leasing the first receiver, it's the same $5 trade-off.

i do not have HD, but my bill for two recievers, AT120, HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, and DPP (Dishnetwork Protection Plan), comes to around 80 bucks or so! Way better than the local cable (Mediacom), can give for the same, and it is all digital!! And last but not least, I have all my locals!!!

Here you go, choose wisely :)

The thing nobody has mentioned is that with dish you can ALWAYS add channels at no extra cost however if you downgrade it will cost you a one time $5 so my advice is get AT120 and look in the guide at what's available on the channels you are missing. If you are looking through the guide and more often than not you want something in 180 upgrade. If not then take the $10, put it aside to rent a movie, cause we all know that even if you have 1000 channels there isn't always something to watch. Also with DHA if you sign a 12 or 24 month agreement they will give you the protection plan FREE.

That is why God made the DVR! After the first week, there's ALWAYS something to watch if you plan ahead. :D

Drat! :) I like the mono music channels when I feed them out to the yard and want real background (mental wallpaper) music. The limited dynamic range and the monaural track allow even distribution so the music is never too loud or "off center" no matter where I am or what's going on. But these are definitely not channels to "listen" to...just to hear.

See ya
