Fantastic!

When I first thought about getting Dish HD this was the channel I wanted most, because of its Rose Parade coverage and Prime Time News in HD. At the time KTLA was the local leader in HD and was the only station with HD news. I was very disappointed when I found out that Dish only provides the Big 4 networks in HD, but I went ahead and got it anyway.

The OTA signal at my house is dicey for KTLA and a number of the other local stations (the worst is the local ABC affiliate---KABC). But about half the time I can get KTLA off-air. I will be curious to compare the PQ, off-air versus satellite.

I've already compared the PQ, subjectively, of course, and I am ecstatic to observe that Dish is providing an HD PQ that is virtually identical to the OTA, as is the case with all the LIL L.A. HD channels. I would put the ever so slightly softer PQ--most people would see absolutely no difference--to the signal being re-compressed into the lossy MPEG format. Actually, there is less break-up on the Dish feed of the L.A. locals when there is fast action, an actual IMPROVEMENT to the OTA. Let's hope Dish keeps this incredible PQ and not have to diminish it over time.

Those in other smaller DMA's have complained that their Dish HD LIL's are noticeably inferior to thier OTA's. IMHO, it is about the much larger population here in L.A. and Dish doesn't want their phone lines jammed with complaining subs in southern California. Satellite has a huge penetration here, perhaps the highest in the country. Dish can provide the same high quality PQ to any of the DMA's, but why don't they while they provide outstanding HD PQ for L.A. LIL's. It's all about the numbers.
