Was wondering if anyone knows if Dish has 4K programming or when they plan to add it. I have the Dish America package and every channel seems to be in 720p.

Unfortunately, not much 4k. A couple of channels, some on demand, and some Netflix.

You should be able to set your receiver to a specific output format (1080i or 720p).
To clarify that for the OP, there are no linear 4K channels at present on Dish. There was one briefly during the Olympics, but only then, and none since. All we have in 4K right now is the limited selection of VOD/PPV, and Netflix (if you have a Netflix subscription package with the UHD/4K add-on), and sadly not even any rumors of anything new. Looks like DirecTV is the place to be if you want 4K programming anytime soon.

What's available on DTV is nowhere near enough to give up a Hopper3 for the crappy HR54/C61 arrangement.
Agree 100%, but the announcement of the additional FOX Sports content in 4K on DirecTV at least made me stop and think about it for a minute. (Specifically the mention of NASCAR 4K, to be honest)
We have quite the conundrum between Dish and DirecTV in terms of 4K. Dish has the killer 4K hardware but disappointingly little 4K programming (and seems apathetic as far as adding any more content), yet DirecTV has tons of 4K content, both linear and VOD, but a crap hardware solution for watching 4K (and seems apathetic as far as coming up with better hardware any time soon).

This is very true. And the announcement that DirecTV will be showing specific English Premier League games in 4k, while Dish still has the EPL extra channels in SD only. I really thought that after Dish made the 8PSK conversion a year and a half ago on western arc that we would see Dish round out their HD offerings as well as add some basic 4k linear content, or at least a channel that would be dedicated to 4k that would be turned on when there was live content. Since that 8PSK conversion, we have had the RSN's go in HD 16 hours a day instead of just game time, and added some 5-6 HD channels, most being in the Latino packages, and a temporary 4k channel for the Olympics. I really thought we would have seen quite a bit more including the RSN's 24/7, the EPL alt channels go HD, ESPN alts in HD for football season, some popular standard channels added in HD, and add more of the premiums in HD. With 4k, I really thought we would have a dedicated 4k channel that would show content live in 4k when it is available, and the rest of the time either replaying the events in 4k or have a 4k movie playing.
But I agree - I don't have a hopper, I have VIP211k - and even the VIP receivers work so much better than when I have used the DirecTV receivers at friends houses.

Once again to defend Dish, there is not one channel ( Broadcast or Cable ) that that has a 4K version of it's channel and there is not even a rumor of doing so, Dish cannot carry something that does not exists.
The only channel except for special events in 4K is DirecTV's channel which they produce themselves and from what I understand is not much new content.
If you want 4K, hopefully you have good broadband and a Roku (4, Premiere, Ultra ), if so there is lots out there.
Vudu has new ( and old ) 4K movies for rent (PPV) at $9.99 a rental, Amazon and Netflix has lots of content in 4K.

I'm as big of a Dish supporter as there is, but at least DirecTV has that special events channel(s), which is considerably more than Dish has...seems like Dish could do the same thing. In regard to new content, there have been at least one press release in recent weeks (FOX) discussing new live content that will be available on those dedicated channels (three of them, I think).
...and I agree, there is quite a bit of 4K content on Amazon and other streaming services. Just wish we could get more of the live events on Dish that are available. It's clear they can do it, since we had the Olympic channel last summer.
There may not be much 4K available on broadcast TV but so far on Directv channel 106 I've watched two NBA games and a Garth Brooks concert. Not a lot but they were stunning. Channel 104 is 4K all the time. Mostly nature stuff and many repeats but at least it's something.
Guess I'll have to go without 4K for a while. Such a shame since I just bought a 43 inch Sony Bravia 4K TV that looks incredible in HD. Streaming in 4K isn't an option because I live in the boonies and and have Exede satellite as my ISP.
Besides lots of 4K programming on Netflix, there's also lots of great stuff on You Tube as well.
In case you don't know, the present ATSC broadcast TV format will not handle 4K. There's not enough bandwidth available. You're going to have to wait for the new ATSC 3 format, and that will require a totally new tuner, as it's not compatible with today's format.

True about YouTube having a lot of 4K content now, but in the context of Dish offerings, it should be noted that the Hopper 3 YouTube App can't output 4K videos in 4K due to the H3 not being compatible with the VP9 encoding that YouTube uses for 4K. You can still watch the 4K content on the H3 YouTube app, but only in 1080i.
Guess I'll do without 4K for a while. Just bought a 43 inch Sony Bravia and was hoping to see what it could do at the highest resolution. My ISP is Exede satellite, so streaming 4K is out of the question due to bandwidth limits.
