Dish messing with Voom, All are now HD-Lite 1280x1080i: Discuss this issue HERE!

Even my Voom avatar appears to be in proportion with 1280 x 1080 Voom HD Lite at least on my computer.

Then what is that called that rupert's Directv is doing?????????
I guess you call that REAL hd and not HD lite:eek:

I thought that most of the Voom channels really sucked last night especially Monsters HD and Rave were just awful, Gary I really dont think that Monsters went back to 1920x1280 if it did it sure wasn't last night! Dish still might be testing some things, but if thats the way they are going to look I don't believe ill be keeping any Voom! But ill give them a chance to fix it, they know the way we feel so we'll see! Btw the rest of the HD pack looked great, Happy New Year! :)

Drone, Monsters is not back to 1920x1080i, false alarm from me, something about the Wicker Man film on there showed no perceivable difference between 1280 vs 1920, this is 9 times out of 10 NOT the case when comparing HD-Lite to True HDTV

It does happen though(when comparing some older movies in 1280 vs 1920)

I wanted to add something to this thread, most if not all Voom channels are now running at decent bitrates, Monsters lots of times hits over 15 Mbps, HDNews is hitting 14 Mbps, Gallery and Equator both around 14.5, majestic guytv around 12.5 Mbps(which is better than HBO/Showtime from 110)

the more I think about it If I had to lay a guess(or 2 ;)) down as to what might happen

I would say that we "might" get 2 mpeg2 1920x1080i's and 1 1920x1080i mpeg4 per transponder, all 5 new Voom in mpeg4, to draw in mpeg4 users

the Voom's right now are all running high enough bitrate for 1920x1080i(they are averaging around or a little more than what Discovery gets)

this would be a scenario that is OK with me, even though I can't record and archive nor playback mpeg4

or things could stay the same as they are(Tp wise) and still have 1920x1080, Dish has stuff laid out very well:

they have:
1 TP with Equator/Monsters/Animania(animation doesn't require near the bitrate, it can use 11 or less Mbps video)
1 TP with Rave/GuyTV/HDNews(GuyTV being amovie channel with Telecine flags can use less bandwidth)
1 TP with Majestic/Rush/Gallery(again Majestic can use less bandwidth as it is a movie channel)
1 TP with Ultra is with 2 upcoming Vooms(one of those being a movie channel, same as above)
1 TP with 3 Upcoming Voom(one of those being a movie channel, same as above)

I have not give up on 1920x1080i yet, it's too long until CES :D

Gary, thanks for the update I hope too that maybe Dish will go this route, I will probally upgrade to a mpeg2/4 reciever after I see exactly what recievers are going to be offered, refering to the Dvr model! Right now were all just in a wait and see mode! Again Happy New Year! :)

For some reason I think that DVR is coming in March.

No. It's been said that 2/1 is the date. But then again we are talking E*, so you might be right with March. March of 2007, that is! Maybe this time they'll actually get it right.

So it's not my imagination. Did they just outright lie about restoring the bitrate? Is there going to be any effort to organize a confrontation with E* over this at CES?

Perhaps I missed something, but I was under the impression as well that true HD resolution had been resotred on the Voom channels. Is this not the case?

What the hell was the point of reducing to 15 channels if they weren't going to improve quality

I really would have thought it would have happened before now though, but we don't have the other 5 Voom's yet either ;)

Um, perhaps the reason they reduced it to 15 is to do HD LiL. Sometimes people can believe they influenced corporate decision making to a greater extent than they actually did.

When we heard that Dish was reducing VOOM from 21 to 15 channels, in part due to feedback from their customers, we believed that we made an impact. Well, perhaps the result of the impact is solely that the channels were reduced from 21 to 15.

I still remain hopeful that we will see some quality improvements. The bell has not yet tolled on VOOM. The new service has not yet been released.

there are 2 options, they either reduced the Voom to increase quality, or they reduced to use space for mpeg4 HD locals, option 2 doesn't make much sense at all, reduce 5 channels, how many Mpeg4 locals will that hold ??, 2 mpeg4 Cities max

George your Directv homerism is showing itself, Dish had all 21 Voom's even too the point of the uplink placeholders being up there, they switched all Voom to 1280x1080i
we complained like hell and then we up and get a announcement that Voom was to be reduced 15 channels

coincidence ?? who knows ??, Charlie did say for quality reasons

we will know in a day or 2
