Hey all

I have a friend who signed up for Dish Network about the time I did and says he got a notice that at least one of his receivers is outdated and will need to be replaced. Of course he can't find this email, so can't tell me which model it is.

Any out there have any list of which receiver/DVR models are being discontinued?

Thanks
Michael

The 301 and 51o are both being discontinued because of their inability to demodulate 8PSK transponders. Your 211K will work anywhere, including on Eastern Arc which has no regular mpeg-2 channels at all.

8PSK is a modulation scheme that allow for more bits of data to be streamed than QPSK, which are the Dish boxes that will no longer be able to receive programming by May 2015. Software alone can not bring an old QPSK Dish box into 8PSK compliance. It is a HARDWARE matter.

I returned a dish system for my friends today. I packed it up and noticed they only want the newer receivers returned.....

I dropped the return box at office max today

I guess they are not using non8PSK equipment for Bell Expressvu anymore? They probably used to refurb it for them up there.

Surprisingly, they're not even asking for the 311, 512, 522, and 625 receivers back. At this point, from what I can see, they are only asking for VIP level equipment back (and the Hopper level, obviously). The rest get a smartcard return kit.

I've been saying for years that DISH needs to do away with older receivers and just keep a class of hd receiver . In this case one Vip class and the Hopper class. It pays to not have to support the old class of receivers for software updates , repairs etc. Also if everyone is on the newer class of receivers that can see all mpeg 4 , they can make changes on the satellites that will enable them to add more hd . Also they must be planning for the eventual inclusion of 4k content and newer 4k receivers too. It all comes back to the old k.i.s.s. method: Keep it simple stupid.

Upgrading is fine but sometimes upgrading isn't always the easiest thing to do for the person doing the upgrades. In many cases people just can't get certain things beyond what is already there without major headache and Dish doesn't disclose all this up front or really can't in some cases.
You upgrade some ole woman to a 211k from a 301 and a basic remote and they get all worked up over how many more buttons are on the remote and confused...they just end up calling Dish for something like this and causing trouble calls for the techs as no fault of their own. I've seen it happen countless times from upgrades that never should have taken place without really flagging the account for something like this to prevent techs from taking the hit. I had one old woman in tears when she was upgraded like this from an old 3800 to a 211, I mean what can you do at that point??
I had to replace wire, which tore up a ton of things around the house just cause there was no other way to get the cable replaced without extra holes and such....had to relocate the dish cause of new dish required better mount cause of weight so she didn't like that etc etc.. lol you can't make this stuff up.
