dish is on the way out

I believe this is an industry wide problem. I also think that one time you can be lucky and get outstanding service and the next time it is crappy.

Too many crooked independent retailers around here for both Dish and Direct. Going with Dish direct has always been superior for me. Sorry, but the company installers are the fastest most courteous and knowledgeable hands down over ANY of the retailers I have ever dealt with.

Sorry that your personal experiences have forced you to make that choice. Guess I'd do the same thing. Hope your example is uncommon.:)

Quick question: If I remember correctly, Direct bought into a company or bought services from a company that provides service; correct? If so, maybe Dish should look down this avenue?

In either case, this is why companies fall; they trust a third party without checking who they are or their history. That is not to say all companies are bad, but in most cases, their service is less than desirable. Look at Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, they use contractors whom they do not look into and get burned on occasion.

You must not be very familiar with the way Dish does things. DirecTV just started buying large installation companies to imitate what Dish has been doing for years. Dish has had it's own internal installation department (DNS) for many, many years. In fact, they've been expanding it recently.

update: never did hear from "Aaron" again, but the email certainly ruffled a few feathers. as a result, Dish will have someone out by tomorrow morning unless someone cancels today--if so, they'll come out today.

I'll probably be switching to D* anyway. with the current D* promotion, I'll pay $45 less per month (yep, $45 less per month) for the same thing I get from Dish. sure, it's only for the first year, but even so, after that it'll be $27/month less. the only thing I won't be able to do is watch recordings on any set in the house (now if I DVR something from my downstairs TV I can watch it downstairs or upstairs because of the 622's design). but that's a small thing when faced with saving $540 over the next 12 months.

Verizon FIOS customers in my area have filed lawsuit because repair visits take on average 14 days. But, when it works people love it. Full Mpeg2 HD, Phone and faster than cable DSL for $100 a month.

Just curious....How are you going to be spending $27 a month less? Can you list your programming package?

Year's back, I'd churned to D*. Now with TurboHD and the great equipment for new customers, I'm E* again (Was E* in 2003 for a while).

We'll have to see what impact the 100% HD packages bring in new customers, but so far it snagged me. I don't think they are on the way out.

Was just getting ready to jump on board with Dish in the next few weeks but now with this merger talk and losing GolTV, beginning to vascillate

IF there is a merger & that is a big IF! Charlie would still want to run the new combined company. I can't see him ever giving that up unless he is wanting a total buyout of DISH and he walks away with a lot of $$. IF the new combined company used Echostar built hd dvrs it would be a winner. Imagine all the bandwith if they did combine services. I always said that they should do a new company that did nothing but Locals. It could be run 50/50 by both companies and it could cut costs all the way around. But if they think a democratic administration would approve a merger like during the republican administration, they would be sadly mistaken as their priorities are different. Besides it took way over a year to get the xm/sirius merger finally approved. THere is only little over 5 months left in this year. I don't think they would be anywhere near enough time to even talk about the merger much less get it through the FCC and the justice department for approval.

update 2: Dish did get us in today. they just left the house and all is well--for the moment. my 61.5 LNB went blind.

crainbo: D* has the "PLUS HD DVR" package. $78 per month ($73 for package, $5 lease fee for a second SD DVR) for everything I get from Dish. Dish currently costs me $106 per month. ok so I lied--I'll save $28/month after the first year.

That was my MAIN REASON for leaving DISH. I wanted to stay but HD channels kept pixelating as if a SEVERE STORM was near. But it would be perfect conditions outside. The guy above stated that he got a second dish installed and it solved his problem...........Um.......Three Dish tech visits to my house and NONE of them suggested this to me at all. Wild! I guess its all for the better. I like D* better anyway. The D* installer did note that the Dish wasn't mounted on the side of my house very well. Oh well, the short term was a bigger expense but long term ultimately saving money with the referral, and other discounts. I have a service call for the installation of the SWM device and its two days. That took FOREVER on the phone with CSR tech etc but I finally convinced them the installer went to the attic to run a second cable and said it couldn't be done due to the configuration of the house. He said in two weeks to a month to call Direct back to ask them to "finish" the install. I kind of got the run around at first. But EVERYONE I spoke with was VERY friendly. I was shocked. I'm just not used to that anymore. But Yeah........2 days...............Anytime I called Dish for a service call, it was around five or six days. If you have the D* protection plan............They do not charge another fee for a service call like E*.

I must be real lucky. I had Dish for 2 yrs. with no real problems. I tried C-crap on a promo for 5 weeks and dumped them. I signed up on another lease with Dish for 18 mos. with my super reliable VIP-722 DVR and love it. I even got my USB port turned on at no charge by a very nice Phillipino girl on a Sunday. I won't consider Direct as they are more sports minded-(I'm not) I won't go back to cable as their picture and sound suck! I have a 7.1 surround system and C-crap doesn't even broadcast in DD. As to the $30 trip fee- I have never had to pay it yet. I'm always in the warranty period when I do have minor problems.

Last, in 2004 2 hurricanes came through here and my SD dish was turned around on its pole. I was walked through where to turn it to by a tech on the phone and was up and running 30 mins. later. That was the day after the hurricane hit us. Dish also gave me a generous credit on a couple of occasions for minor service problems.

I really have nothing bad to say about Dish after almost 4 yrs. with them. Am I the only person?? Sometimes things go right and other times you can't get to 1st base. I used to work in a cable call center and know how to talk to most people when I need or want something.

The key is to be NICE to the reps. It works for me most of the time. I knew many reps who either dropped calls or just told the customer they'd take care of the problem and didn't follow through because the customer pissed them off. It was so easy for me to pick up the phone, call the tech center, and get what I needed for my customers. Why? Because I treated the techs with respect and returned the favor when they needed something I could do for them. Hope this makes sense to you.
