"DISH Gives You A Choice" flyer

Again, spin. It's not that local channels aren't important to the customer, it's that they realized they can receive OTA, save $12/month and possibly get more channels at a better quality than what Dish was providing.

Nielsen isn't the only game in town any more. And I agree the diary system left a lot to be desired. But as they expand metered markets, I think it's a more realistic indicator of how many are watching.

Not really spin -- more like changing reality to improve Dish's bargaining position. Dish could be encouraging their customers to not get locals through Dish, making it a fact, in reality, that the customers are not as interested in getting their locals through Dish and therefore less important to Dish come negotiation time.

I was in a metered Nielsen household. Their methodology for capturing what we watched, especially when it comes to DVR'd content was horrible and prone to bad data generation. I have no confidence that their viewership numbers are within a standard deviation of reality after seeing how they actually capture the data. Their online technologies are even worse. We didn't even consider them to be of any value when I worked in online media, and we never used their data to make any decisions.

I will continue to pay $10 ($12-$2 credit) for the Dish locals even though I receive 48 OTA channels from Columbus and Dayton Ohio. PTAT allows me to watch network prime time programming without having to setup a lot of timers which can easily mess up when the Guide is not correct. On certain days I watch 4 different series recorded on the same date and time. Auto hop works the next day for 2 of the networks. I could save the $10 per month since I have 2 Hopper3 receivers and each one has a dual OTA tuner but the convenience of PTAT is worth the money. Some people pay more than that every couple days for coffee at Starbucks.

But there's a difference between "Local channels are not important to our customers" and "Customers don't want to get their locals from us". Dish (any MVP) WANTS to have the locals. LiL for satellite was a huge selling point and made them a true option to cable. Dish does have a plus in that they have OTA tuners, which I don't believe Direct does. If I was sitting across from Dish and they said "You can't raise rates that much because our customers don't want to subscribe to you", I'd point to my data showing how many people DO want to watch local broadcasters. If Dish wants to hang their hat on that, I think we'll find even more blackouts.

Indeed, I don't think anyone is going to say we'll see fewer blackouts with Dish going forward, unless the local stations suddenly decide to stop raising rates by unreasonable amounts. I do think Dish is going to do everything they can to weaken the local stations' bargaining position, including lowering how many of their customers actually receive said locals. You may not agree that there is value in doing so, I am merely speculating that Dish may be doing so. I don't actually know that they are, but it seems like something they would do IMHO.

We live in a rural and we can get one station over the air. I have tested everything I know of. We are are 80 miles from the nearest tower. I hate that 12 dollar fee. But no choice and I am sure there are many others in the same bind.

No question. But all the more reason to say locals benefit from Satellite/Cable at the least if not more than DISH benefits from carrying them. If the locals can't provide an OTA signal in their exclusive by law protected DMA then they shouldn't be able to charge you to watch them in my opinion. You should be paying whatever the actual cost is for them and DISH to get the signal to you. If we want to go a step further, let the locals charge if you can receive their signal and choose not to by getting by Satellite. AND if they can't provide the signal you should be able to pick another local if you want to watch if Satellite is willing to do it. (DISH has always been willing to - maybe a little too willing lol)

I gladly pay dish for locals. We have eight full power stations. Five of them have their transmitters located northwest of me directly behind a hill which blocks them all. Of course about a 100 foot tower might solve my problem.

Don't want to is not the same as don't HAVE to.....

Similar situation here. I don't think they'll be making that free antenna offer here -- they'd have to put up just about the biggest, deepest-fringe antenna you can get.

When Dish they are they only ones that not all true
Directv now offers this in pilot test market. Copies of flyers posted here
Diffrence is you only save $10 a month
But
You got all and i do mean all local guide data. Some markets have 50 channels. Dish just has guide data for the big five.
Directv has recently added guide data for about 1,000 digital sub channels. Dish has add none
Directv is added guide data every two weeks in bulk should be done by summer for the national promo. Rumors have it they might price match the dish savings but others say they wont has Dish is missing most of the OTA guide data hence the price difference.
Compitition is good.

Hey Scott. Totally agree competition is good. Got any links to the rumors you reference? I want to know more.

What model OTA antenna is Dish installing?
