bshef, several us are really trying to beef up the D* area and increase the number of posters and readers. Even Scott has installed D* at his house to evaluate them as well as provide more insight then just E*. I am not sure we will ever surpass E* but we are definitely taking a proactive step to improve and increase the D* area. Your posts, thoughts, advice and questions will only improve this area.

Strive for quality not quantity, its like having a truck load of walmart hot dogs or a single Philly hot dog with mustard and onions and relish and maybe a bit of sour kraut.......

Not that I want AT&T to own Directv or Dish Network, but I would rather they spent the money on extending DSL coverage and buy a satellite provider for video. If I was on the board and running things, it would be that strategy or fiber all the way. As good as copper has been over the years, it just cant cut the new HD age. They are unfortunately going to find out the hard and expensive way years from now. But of course, the CEO will get a nice exit pay of 100 million for making the wrong decision.

Brewer,
You quotes here are exactly correct, and I hate it.
They have fiber (in some areas) running to the neighborhoods and the last leg goes on copper.
I too think they are wasting thier time on this and wish they would just buy one of the sat providers for video.
Copper has been around forever and still working well in the majority of situations, but I personally would not be trying to run video over it when they had an oppretunity to go ALL fiber and decided to go only part way. Going fiber all the way would require years in placement to entire cities but would be the right thing to do in the long run, of course this should have been started a long time ago, not in the last year.
After watching them closely, you never see them take a chance on something and potentially be the 1st to try something and have others follow them, it's always lets see how so and so does this or that and then decide if it's worth it, if it is we will go that route also, consequently they end up 3-4 years behind others and by the time the AT&T stuff is ready to run, the next hot option is already being pushed by the compitition.

Jimbo,

Short-term investors may not like Verizon's fiber-to-the-home strategy due to the huge up-front investment, but FiOS broadband and TV are growing as quickly as they can bury and install fiber. Long-term, fiber-to-the-home is much cheaper than maintaining a nationwide infrustructure of aging copper. I think Verizon's gamble is going to pay off in the long run. If the folks at FiOS were wise, they would move quickly to improve or replace their DVR. Anyway, I never did like the AT&T U-Verse model and I can't see how buying D* or E* is going to help them.

The latest news on Uverse is only 1 HD stream until mid-2008. And that will only allow 2 HD streams. Who knows if 3 HD streams is even going to happen.

I remember when I first joined the satguys forums, I aked some newbie questions when I was trying to decide between keeping directv or switching to dish. I was reading a lot and asking questions in the dish forum, and I believe I stated, "it sure seems like on these baords there is a lot more users for dish based on the amount of posts compared to directv's boards". I had one guy resond with "thats because dish's equipment is crap and 60% of our posts are dish users helping eachother with their equipment".

Funny how times have changed. :)

I wouldn't say they have changed. Directv's equipment works for me so far.
