DISH FIRST TO OFFER TV SERIES IN 1080P RESOLU

I think if they fix the download speed, Mine took 9 hours to download, it will be more worth it. The quality was much better than the norm. Can't wait to try it when they get the 1080p fixed.

By the way my TV is only 1080p/60 and passes the 1080p test.

I just finished downloading The Beast 1080p (I haven't watched it yet). Just over 6 hours. I only have a 1.544 Mbps T1 from a CLEC (Cbeyond). Could Cable/DSL providers be throttling bandwidth?

I just wish they would clean up the VOD menus/interface and make it easier to find content!

The download was terrible ... there were a good dozen times when the whole screen got pixelated and another half a dozen times where the audio got cut.

I'll try it one more time but for the first time ... I give Dish a D-.

It took about 18 hours to download and has a few spots that were pixalated. Not bad though. For those of us in Alaska that don't get A&E HD this is a nice way to get more HD content, hopefully they'll fix the download speed issue.

I would like to see them put up Deadliest Catch when it starts this season, providing they don't add that channel to Alaska's HD lineup "soon".

Does anyone know how often they add or change the HD content?

Why oh why does VOD content have pixelation? And why does it take SOOOO long for VOD content to start and delete? It's VNODAWALATTDL not VOD

It should not be called VOD unless it starts immediately. Call it VDS, video download service. I really don't mind selecting videos to download and watch it the next day.

The first time I downloaded it , the video took 2 days to load. THen it was only in 1080i. The second time I downloaded it yesterday , it loaded within minutes and when I played it -no picture at all ,just black screen with sound. I have a regza 42" Toshiba hd lcd tv that does 1080p. So I might try a third time and see if I can get it in 1080p, but I doubt it.

Agreed ... why should a download have pixelation and sound drops. I have "downloaded" via bittorrent lots of stuff ... each perfect.

I'm a tad disappointed as well. I've played the 1080p/24fps content on PPV on Demand in the past. This online 1080p episode prior to downloading just gives a message saying "IF your TV is incapable of doing 1080p, it will downconvert to a resolution that works". Well, after waiting 16 hours (not too bad), I played the "Dish Online" 1080p episode and it just started playing. It didn't try to change my TV to 1080p (usually the TV will blink a bit as it puts out the new resolution on the HDMI cable). So if my 722 was set to 720p, it would play 720p; if it was set to 1080i, it would play 1080i...it didn't really try 1080p!

I think they are still working the bugs on this. Maybe the content IS 1080p, but their code to change the receiver to output 1080p is still not working yet (it never even tries!)

Curious about something - I have never played any of the 1080p ondemand stuff, but I remember reading that when you do it disables output for TV2. Is that also true for this 1080p content?

I downloaded it and watched about half of it last night. The download took about 24 hours (only a 768k DSL connection here) and it did not play in 1080p in spite of the fact that I have a Sony XBR4 that does 1080p/24 quite well with my Blu-ray player. I also had the intermittent pixelation and audio drops, but overall the picture looked great. That said, I don't think I would do this again given that I can watch the show in HD on its live broadcast, although the commercial free version was nice.

Yes I have a 1080p TV.

Oh yeah..... it only took my about 2.5 hours to download at 4.17Mb/sec, it dowloaded from 9:00pm to about 11:30pm PST.

I haven't been able to test since I just bought the tv Saturday. I can get 1080p with Blu-ray. I don't have any 1080p movies on the video on demand recorded.

Well, I am trying to download it again. I have a 1.5Mb DSL and it currently is downloading at 1.22Mb ... which sounds about right. So this time around, it is downloading MUCH better.

I did go to Batman on channel 501 and I did the 1080P test on it. It comes up with if you want to rent. I say yes. My screen then goes black for a second or two and then it comes back with are you sure. At that point I check my TV settings and sure enough it says 1080P. I then cancel the rental.

I also noticed this time around, as noted in a post above, the wording:

"If your TV is incapable of doing 1080p, it will down convert to a resolution that works".

It makes me wonder if the DishOnline test is different than the VOD 501 test?

We'll see what happens with the second download ...

yep, that is what I am thinking.

I have a pioneer kuro 5020 which passes the 1080p test on 501 and I downloaded it and it played back 1080i. Never saw any resync/resolution check so think it is a bug in the VOD playback code as mentioned above.

Since your TV upconverts everything to 1080p, regardless of source, one would think that just doubling every other line of a 1080i output to 1080p is a lot easier and more accurate than what it has to do to convert 720p.

From a geek, yep your wrong.

1080i to 1080p is not just doubling every other line. In must be de-interlaced, which the TV may or may not do correctly.

720p to 1080p is simple scaling.
