Dish Chat News!!!

I'm watching the Dish chat right now and they are talking about the demand for more than one Hopper is more than they thought it would be. They are changing the fee to get a second Hopper from $199 to $99. This would be for new customers signing up for Dish and the Hopper system. So now a new customer could sign up and get two Hoppers and three Joeys for just $99 if the get the Top 120 or more for programming. That's a pretty sweet deal.

I told Dish from day one that one hopper in a typical 4 room installation wouldn't work. It would just piss of customers. At least now this kinda puts them in line with DirecTV's charge of $99 for the HR34.

Needed 4 tuners, at least. PTAT is nice in theory but not practical as it would have been when the big 4 was the BIG 4.

So are we going to see a 6 tuner Hopper 2 at CES in January?

Things that make you go hmm.

I thought you posted good reasons why that was unlikely to happen.

I would say a guess at this point. Alhough I have heard rumblings for a few months now that a new Hopper was in the works. Nothing solid just rumblings...

Before the Hopper was announced at 3 tuners I had heard that they were working on a system with up to 6 tuners. Then the disappointing announcement of only 3, but I understand the limits of DPP and their desire for only one drop cable (probably from their early 921 learning days). I wonder if they worked out something more like DIRECTV's tech or are they thinking 2 cables?

Meh... even with 4. That's 0 left for recording in a 4 room install. With a 2-H/2-J install that's 2 left for recording...not many, but not bad either.

That would be cool... and here's hopping they throw the Duo Node/Solo Node garbage out the window as well. Such a broken solution there.

Well, to me at least as an installer; if they can get a feed to a 6 tuner receiver through one wire and back feed all the other rooms all with that same wire then that's all they need. I don't mind running three wires from the dish to the node at all. One wire would be nice for that too but I'll take what I can get.

My biggest question is whether it would be 4 tuners or 5/6 tuners. The current frequency allocation on the cable looks like they could only add one more tuner with quad band stacking - the "FUTURE" 50-575mhz range in the install docs. Beyond that they would have to consign themselves to two cables or implement a whole new SWM-like switching technology sending a single transponder down the pipe instead of half the satellite.

Just a fourth tuner would add a lot of headroom, but six would be killer.

I live in a DMA where we do not get HD locals - PTAT is useless, besides I already have my own PTAT.

I bought 2 HD TiVos, each with 2 OTA tuners.

I can, and do, not only record the big 4 whenever I want (24/7 not just 8 hours on weekdays) but I can export the recordings to my PC and schmooze them and burn them to DVD's if I want to save them.

Now that Dish and TiVo have kissed and made up, Dish needs to get a TiVo based DVR like DirecTV so we can do the same with satellite channels, not just OTA.

We're a 2 person household with a 2H/2J system. My SO and I have different tastes in viewing and we record virtually every show we watch. For us the 2H/2J system is barely adequate. For example tonight I'm using all 3 tuners for recording from 8 to 11 PM and Hard Knocks has been rescheduled until tomorrow.

Glad to see at least someone thinks there is stuff worth watching on television. ;)

Because we didn't get anything at low cost or free when we joined?
No- because after as many years as some have had Dish, they've been loyal customers sending money faithfully every month. This "freebies for newbies" practice is the main cause of churn.

DP 013 Receiver SD MPEG 2 and MPEG4 Satellites ?

any way to force guide update or timer schedule rebuild?
