Hi all,
Just wondering if Dish is going to make this available to the people that don't have a HD receiver? I don't have a LOS for hd.

This deal Netflix just announce doesn't take start until 2013. To me it sounds a little like damage control and not very good damage control at that. If you read the full article next year Netflix is losing it's rights to stream Disney & Sony, and having to wait until 2013 to start streaming Dream Works...well, wow, in 2013 we'll be able to stream "Kung-Fu Panda" & "Shrek". Like who hasn't seen those movies by now??? And even though I agree that this move by Dish isn't aimed at just Netflix, a lot can happen in two years with Dish/BB getting more rights, specially if studios out there start feeling that Dish is getting the lion share of streaming customers.

The point is content is getting expensive as the streaming market matures, and it will be interesting to see what a notoriously stingy company with a propensity for content disputes will do against competition like Netflix and Amazon who will open their pocketbook for their content.
Then again, if their goal is to just provide a service that doesn't compare apples to apples... more power to them I suppose. They just won't get my business if they insist on forcing a DVD by mail service on top of a streaming service just to fudge numbers and say they're offering more overall content.
How is something that's out in 2013 damage control? They're a public company, are they supposed to make the deal and be quiet about it for a year and a half?
Got my upgrade to L677 last night. Now have a new Option "DISH Platinum" on my DVR screen and the screen is now called DISH on Demand. If I selectt DP, I get a Welcome screen with a statement I have to agree to. Then I get an Explore Movies screen. From there there are a number of options. Once you select a filter and search, you can toggle between all and free by pressing the * key. Didn't go any further.
I have the same thing on L686 on a 722k. I posted in another forum and was told "Dish Platinum" had been there for a while. But it looked new to me, with all the search/filter options. It appears to have all the streaming content promised by the BB package - about 5000 streaming titles, 800 of which are in HD. It's essentially On Demand content for Starz, Epix, etc.
DISH will still have those films via Starz. Dreamworks just made a deal with Netflix so they could continue to stream those films after 2012.
And so they didn't have to pull their movies from iTunes when they go to HBO.

Even if you dont have a clear LOS for HD, you can still get an HD (ViP) model receiver. They dont depend on any specific satellite to work, you just wont get HD programming without the HD satellite.
Bottom line, you can upgrade to an HD receivr, just know what you're getting into 1st, i.e. no HD programming. I do upgrades for folks all the time without a LOS or even a HD tv simply because they want the larger drive space of the 722's. Just make sure you've got a fast & reliable internet connection.
