can you get hd channels with a dish 500 or do i have to have a 1000 ?

You won't get all HD channels with just a Dish 500. Either you'll need a wing dish looking at 61.5 or 129, or some flavor of the Dish 1000.

Meridian HD locals went live from 129° on 4/1 with all 4 major networks. You will need a Dish 1000, 1000.2, or add a second dish to get them.
