DIRECTV unlikely to keep NFL Sunday Ticket

Again, no one knows what Amazon/Apple/ESPN will pay and what they will charge for it.

It will not be $7.5 billion, that number, I believe, was put out there by the NFL to get the bidding to go higher between the 3 companies.

Or by one of those companies to get the others to drop out.
There are not going to lose money

A few years ago he had also previously predicted that NFL franchises would fold, so.....
I am just talking simple economics

Directv made a huge profit off of it for years by gaining customers

Now pay tv is too expensive and customers are leaving

So someone decides to pay double what directv paid?
The consumer interest in premium sports packages is not growing...its shrinking

This will be fun to watch

They are not, already explained, major sports are also on streaming services, MLB and NHL games are also on ESPN+, NFL‘s TNF is on Prime only this upcoming season, Sunday Ticket is about to go streaming only.

ok, this forum is not the place for this, but since you asked-
Paramount Global-CBS/Nick/Paramount/MTV/Comedy Central/BET on P+ next day
NBCUniversal-NBC/SyFy/Universal-on Hulu/Peacock next day
Disney-ABC/Freeform/FX/Nat Geo-FX shows are usually on Hulu same day or before, the rest next day on Hulu and D+
Fox-Hulu next day
Discovery-Animal Planet/ Food Network/HGTV/Discovery Channel/etc are on Discovery+ sometimes weeks ahead of being on Traditional Channels, most of their programming is on same or next day.
AMC-most of their shows premiere a week before they are on regular AMC on AMC+

All I can think of for now.
That’s a lot to remember and keep straight. Congratulations.

What College Football game this week, season is over?

They can only show what is in season, hence NHL Games Live, College Basketball Live and PGA Golf Live.

Go to the schedule if you want to see who is playing.
I'm asking about During the Season, are those games available, or just the "other than network" Games ?

I am just talking simple economics
Just because who can write the word does not mean you knows what It means, no one knows what any of the streaming companies will do with it-

For example
If Amazon gets it, all we know is it would be bad economics to make it a loss leader since, pretty much, almost all U.S. households has Prime already, it would be good economics to sell it as a stand alone, but at what price, since they have 150 million, can they sell it at $100, they would need 25 million to bite, at $100 it is easier to do and pick up the fringe fan then say $200.

My guess is that that will sell a single team for $100 and all for $200, if they get it.

Also, Amazon can charge more to businesses ( as DirecTV does) to help pay, have the infrastructure to do so with Amazon Business.

Apple-still makes no sense to me why they would want it, bad economics all around, maybe as a loss leader, will lose $$$ if they get it, also does not have the infrastructure for streaming business customers

ESPN+-loss leader only to get subs, do not have enough subs to sell it as a stand alone, heck Discovery+ has more subscribers then ESPN+, will have to raise monthly price and prepay for yearly so people do not drop it after the season.

Easy to do Business Subs, just start ESPN+ for Businesses App and charge whatever.
Now pay tv is too expensive and customers are leaving

It is not just they are leaving, it is they are dying off also and the under 35 crowd just does not want Traditional TV, so not attracting new subs, the main customers are in the 40-70 age range.

There is no evidence of that, if you have it, post a link.

I am not talking about sports, which, mostly, gets very low ratings ( except Football) and considering the only Pay TV service that is gaining customers are Hulu Live and YTTV, neither of them has RSNs.

For example about the ratings, found this-

Bally Sports Florida, the network home of the Florida Panthers, announced the 2020-21 Panthers regular season finished as Florida's highest-rated locally in nearly two decades. The Panthers posted a 0.5 HH rating average (7,852 homes) over the course of 54 regular season games. The 0.5 HH marks Florida's best viewership number since the 2003-04 season and represents a +67% increase for the Panthers in year-over-year viewership.

Wow less then 8,000 people, Bally Sports Florida is state wide here, so a population of over 20 million and they get less then 8,000.

You can't sell it for less than you pay for it

Directv sold overpriced satellite tv to pay for it..

Unless they are gonna bundle it

They will have to charge $300 + to make a profit

You can sell single team packages but that will only cut their gross..most people get their team on regular tv..only a limited marked would buy games

Simple economics means you make more than you pay for a product

So if the price doubles what directv pays..the consumer will also have to pay more

Its really not that hard to figure out

Not really, no. With streaming you have a lot more options to monetize the product, some more obvious (advertising) than others (other subscription content, partnerships). This in addition to the brand value you own by being able to offer this to begin with, improving retention, loyalty and driving other monetization options.

That is what DirecTV charge for it, losing $600-800 million for the last few years and only getting 2 million to subscribe to it.

That is why I strongly believe Amazon, if they get it, can attract more customers to it if they charge less, if say $100, they can charge customers 4 $25 payments, people can accept that, if $200, $50 payments, a little harder to accept, will not get as many, will they get enough, who knows.

Some people have favorite teams, I am from the Detroit Area, would actually hate if I miss out if the Lions ever win anything, the only Lions game on here last season was the Thanksgiving Game.

duh

DirecTV also only had 21 million subscribers at it’s peak in 2017, now down to roughly 12 million, Amazon has 150 million, more to draw from if they price it less.

Yes it is because we do not know anything.

Let’s see who gets it and what they plan to do with it and if that makes good/bad economics.

Your not getting it
If directv cant make a profit at 1 billion
Whoever gets it won't make a profit at 2 billion

Its just not in demand as much as it used to be..hint hint..its too expensive now on directv

I am sure Disney or Amazon could use a tax writeoff..maybe thats the plan

The problem is the vast majority watch the NFL on local tv..gamblers will love it...MLB, NHL and NBA have alot more content to stream..its a perfect solution for a RSN..they are a perfect fit for your scenerio...but the NFL us a one day a week deal

You are not getting it, all we are doing is playing Monopoly with the NFL instead of fake real estate, no one know what they will do with it, maybe they will sell commercials to help with the high fee, we do not know.

You have been pushing the NFL is going down for awhile now, ratings were up this year, not just for local games, but national as well
I am sure Disney or Amazon could use a tax writeoff..maybe thats the plan
Again, I really just think you just want the NFL to fail.

You are not playing monopoly

NBC,FOX,CBS and ESPN have skin in the game

The sunday ticket only resells whats on those channels

Its not that hard to figure out

Sunday Ticket is only for a limited audience not served by local tv stations

You don't need it to watch the NFL

Most people get 4 games a sunday..even more if you live between tv markets...like living between philly and ny

Its just an extra service serving a select audience

Just because you're happy with your option of ~4 games any given Sunday as ~10 others are going on, doesn't mean others don't need it to watch NFL, lol.

So many hysterically wrong absolutes in your post to address otherwise, will leave it at that.
There is market for Sunday Ticket

Directv proved it

Its just not a big as people think

You keep saying that, I am someone who wants Sunday Ticket, if it is $300 from Amazon, I am willing to pay it, there has to be others like me that wants it, but does not want DirecTV.

99.99% of people that want ST, HAVE ST. Nobody, with maybe 30 exceptions nationwide, is sitting around staring dumbly at their Amazon app wishing and wishing it got ST.

No, they call DirecTV, and they get DirecTV. Really that simple.

So we are back to basics. There is no way for anybody to actually make money on ST on a cash basis. Rather, like DirecTV, any provider will have to predicate the ability to buy ST from it on first buying its basic product. That simple.

For homes, it could be anybody, really. The number of current subscribers each has is irrelevant. The main issue is, of course, that the single type of programming that most non-sports streamers provides (all are really just HBO, c. 1995) is not for everybody, just as most people didn’t get HBO, et al, back in the day.

For commercial, it gets more complicated. What use does a bar have with Netflix? Apple TV? Et al ?

ESPN+ seems the most logical. Unless they just shell out commercial to DirecTV.

Opening it up to more than one provider is nonsense.
