Directv shuts down my tv

My tv surges and shuts down since getting directv. When i change a channel from satallite to say off-air on my hd/dvr, my tv makes a strange high pitch whine sound and shuts the tv off. Does this make any sense to anyone? I have a panasonic plasma 42 inch. I have had dishtv and bellexpressvu for 5 years and this never happened before.

Here's a guess. Are you perhaps using a "universal" remote control for both units to make the switch? It is possible that the code for the satellite/off-air switch is the same code as for your TV's "off" function. The high-pitched whine you hear is simply the sound of the television's high-voltage to the picture tube being cut off as the TV is being shut down normally (i.e. it is not a "surge") by the remote. Even if you're using separate remote controls for each unit, it's just possible that those two units use the same codes for the two different functions (even if the overall listed "codes" for the remote controls are different). Just a thought.
